Pregnancy Answer A1468
According to your symptoms (amenorrhea, negative home pregnancy test and galactorrhea) it seems that you might be experiencing some hormonal disorder, perhaps hyperprolactinemia. Prolactin is a pituitary hormone that stimulates the breasts to produce milk. The pituitary gland normally produces prolactin in larger quantities at the end of pregnancy and during breast feeding. Prolactin also inhibits ovarian follicle growth and ovulation, which manifests with irregular cycles and sterility in addition to galactorrhea. First, you can take another pregnancy test. If it is negative again, you can go to your gynecologist or endocrinologist. The blood level of prolactin and other ovarian and pituitary hormones has to be examined. If the level of prolactin in the blood is increased, then your pituitary gland must be examined (with a CT-scan of the head) for any tumors. Therapy depends upon the possible cause for hyperprolactinemia.
