Q: Fertility issues after IUD Removal
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 8th, 2006
I got an IUD (mirena) 3 years ago ... We are wanting to try for another child. How long can we expect to wait to get pregnant after i have the IUD taken out and are there and complications I can expect after having it taken out? Please keep in mind we tried for 2 years before getting pregnant with our first child with no known reason for why it took so long . I am afraid my daughter will be too old to really bond and be close to a sibling who is conciderably younger than herself. thank you

If everything is ok within your reproductive system, you may get pregnant as soon as you take out the IUD. An IUD doesn’t have prolonged contraceptive action after its removal, like contraceptive pills do. If you can’t get pregnant after the IUD removal, the reason may be something else not related to the IUD directly. An IUD, while used, can cause some complications that may disturb fertility later. IUDs make the uterus more vulnerable to infections. But the risk for infections is increased only in women who have many sexual partners and do not use condom. Infections can damage the uterus and Fallopian tubes which can cause infertility. Because of these reasons, an IUD is not recommended for young women who haven’t delivered yet or who want to have more babies.
