Q: Fetal Movements not Stopping...is this normal?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 10th, 2006
I am 32 weeks pregnant with my second (it is a boy) and since 22 weeks, this baby does not rest. I am not exaggerating. At first I could count maybe 4-5 minutes at most of no activity. But now, not more than a few seconds. He even wakes me up in the middle of the night. I honestly do not know how he is surviving- don't babies need sleep? I have expressed my concern to the doctor and at 23 weeks, saw a perinatologist who said everything looked good. I have since gone for weekly non-stress tests and 2 biophysical profiles- all of which are normal.

This seems not only abnormal, but almost impossible. I am don't think I can survive this. No research I have found indicated this as a problem except one posting somewhere online in which an older women who had constant 24/7 movement found out the baby had downs syndrome. I had the triple screen test and it was 1 in 900 and although they did not do the blood test, they measured the nuchal chord, which was also normal.

Has anyone ever heard anything like this, and was the baby normal? Any help would be great. I am ready to commit myself.

Often fetal movements are not a sign of Down syndrome. You may calm down and continue to do your regular pregnancy checks until the delivery day comes. I feel that you can trust the medical examinations that you have taken that the baby will be born in good health.
