hello
i had the operation performed on me nearly
a year ago when I was 17. I wished I
could of had it done years ago. I
suffered so much inner stress never mind
other people hurting my feelings. I hated
my ears sticking out so much - I didn't
know of an operation that could force them
back until recently.
You are doing the right thing. She wants
it done and you're prepared to support
her. That is fantastic.
The operation is pretty much straight
forward. But the pain she will get can't
be predicted. I have read where many
people had hardly any pain whereas I
suffered a lot of pain. I did have
tablets to help it but they were useless.
If your daughter suffers pain, the main
thing to realise is that it won't last
long. I suffered pain for 4 days where it
was horrid but there after, the pain was
very minimal. After your daughter has had
the operation, she will be required to
wear badnages for a week, I had to wear
them for 8 days, it varies between
institution I guess.
Put it this way, she will not get the best
sleep she has ever had during the week
that's for sure. She will only be allowed
to lie on the back of her head. It can
become very uncomfortable but I supose you
do get used to it. Expect no more than 6
hours a sleep a night. But she might out
do this, good on her if she does! After
the bandages have come off, she still will
only be sleeping on the back of her head
as her ears will be swelled up. Around a
week post bandages, she will slowly be
allowed to sleep on her ears. She may be
required to wear a headband for a while
after the operation. Many people are
expected to wear it 24/7 whereas some are
asked just to wear it at night or during
the day. I on the other hand was not
asked to wear it, and it resulted in my
ears coming slightly forward again. I am
not in the process of trying to get this
operation redone again on the nhs as I am
simply not happy with the result.
Since your daughter is young, she will be
delicate, so her ears will suit their new
position far more easier.
After the bandages have been taken off,
she will notice that sticjhes are defined
and ears are all biggish and swollen and
they virtually stick to her head. This
won't last. Her ear will move slightly
forward to make them look 'normal', that
is why ears are pinned to the head during
this operation as ears will come forward a
very little bit. Sitches will fade and in
the end you won't realise she had the
operation.
During the operation and post op, she will
go through some phyical pain but she is
saving her self a great deal of inner
stress and possible bullying in the
future. Good luck to her and your self.
When she starts to cry over the pain,
remember, the pain will go for ever after
a few days whereas if she didn't have the
operation,s he would probably suffer
emotional stress and bullying for years on
end and she will never be happy with her
self and her self esteem would be so low.
