Everytime I am in a situation where people
look at me I blush. My face goes bright
red and if asked a question I can feel
everyone looking at me and I start to burn
up and sweat. For example I can never
speak up in meetings at work even though I
have things to say as I know I will just
go red and get embarassed. I thought
i'd grow out of this but its getting
worse. I am a confident person apart
from this and if I cant stop its going to
affect my career as I could never give a
presentation. What can I do to stop
this?

I have the same problem. It started in my
early twenties and comes and goes. When
it gets bad i'll blush several times a
day, which is quite crippling really. I
think it gives people the impression that
i'm unsure of myself or embarrassed, when
really i'm only embarrassed because I just
turned bright red!
One thing that seems to work is clonidine.
I find it puts me to sleep, so I take a
dose before I go to bed and then i'm much
less likely to blush the next day. At
least it prevents the blushing that is so
bad that I break out in a sweat.
A couple of years ago I was looking into
ets surgery, which was meant to cure the
problem in most people, but didn't go
ahead with it. Now the doctor I talked to
no longer performs the op on people with
blushing only (it's also a cure for
excessive sweating - hyperhidrosis)
because of the side effects.
If you do a search for hyperhidrosis and
blushing, which are apparently both
manifestations of an overactive
sympathetic nervous system, you'll find
lots of information and forums.
