Pap Smear After Total Hysterectomy Posted: 01-24-04 14:48pm
I had a total hysterectomy last november.
Total meaning, cervix,uterus, tubes and
ovaries. Immediately after the surgery,
the doctor put a patch on me (which was
estrogen). I noticed that my hair
started falling out. Lots of hair!!
Thank god I have alot to begin with...
Anyway... After about 5 months and losing
more than half of my hair (it's long)...
I called him and said that something
needed to change. He changed my patch to
a small green hormone pill with both
estrogen and progesterone. The hair has
stopped falling out and I feel pretty
good. Note - for the 1 week that we
decided to do nothing (between patch and
green pill)... The hot flashes and night
sweats were unbearable!! Not only for me,
but for my husband too - he had to endure
my tossing, turning, moaning and screaming
every night!!!!
Anyway... To my original question. Does
anyone know why my doctor schedules me for
an annual pap smear???? If there is no
cervix - no uterus.... What is he going
to swab? If are no parts
whatsoever...What's the big deal about
hormone replacement therapy?? If the
scare is that you'll increase your chance
of uterine cancer- I don't have one???
Anyone???

I also wondered the same thing, my doctor
told me that because they cannot be
totally sure if they got all the cells of
the cervix, they will do a pap. That way,
if there is some remaining cells of the
cervix, they can be sure they remain
healthy. And just when you thought you
never needed one again....!!! I am not
totally sure what they actually would
swab, but just to be sure!!
