Panic attack: what can be the undelying health issue?
Posted: 09-21-06 03:26am

Recently i have begun having severe panic attacks, i went to the er the other day for a severe one (i thought i was dying, or having a heart attack). Im a healthy female, i used to exercise daily, and i try not to eat junk food. These panic attacks come out of nowhere, in fact they recently started. They are to the point that i cant sleep at night b/c my body automaticly wakes me up as i doze off, im constantly checking my heart rate. The er did some test (ekg, urine anaylsis, heart rate) and they all checked out. This has come on very sudden and i wonder if maybe there is some kind of underlying health issue it could be. Gerneraly speaking the attacks start with me feeling dizzy and freaking out b/c of that and what it could mean. i would really like to get some sleep.
thanks
jenna

Given the symptoms you report (sudden panic attacks during the night…), you might be experiencing panic disorder. Panic disorder is a kind of neurotic disorder with a complex etiology. Before establishing this diagnosis, several organic disorders have to first be excluded (including heart attack, angina pectoris, heart arrhythmia, thyroid disorder, high blood pressure…). Panic disorder can be treated with medication and psychotherapy. Anxiolitics are used for fast relief of symptoms and antidepressants for long term treatment. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are first choice for modern treatment of anxiety because of their efficiency and fewer side effects. Psychotherapy is also very important and includes cognitive-behavioral methods and techniques for managing and eventually perceiving situations differently. You can ask expert help from a psychologist, psychiatrist, or another mental health professional.
