Blood Clot after birth: what is it? where is it from? Posted: 09-24-06 21:30pm
I gave birth to my third child in 2005.
While the doctors were trying to pull out
the "after birth", they pulled out a blood
clot the size of a basketball first. I
have been too afraid to ask what is was,
what caused it, and where it came from. So
could you please shed some light on it for
me?
Thank you in advance,
LBoogy

The “after birth” you describe is
called the placenta. The placenta and
amnion covering are present after birth,
and you probably expelled a blood clot
with them. There is always some bleeding
when the placenta is removed from the
uterus’s wall. In some cases, the
bleeding is of a larger volume. You will
have to ask the doctors that assisted your
delivery for more precise information.
