I got this letter from a friend and would really appreciate some help.

Exclamation to everyone out there who gets this message please keep passing it on to anyone you know. It is not a joke or a chain letter. This is my niece and she needs help. There is no exaggeration at all, in fact it really understates what meaghan and her family have gone through. If you have any ideas at all about where they can turn to please email me or my mother in law below. Please read the letter below.

I am writing this letter as a desperate plea to get help for my daughter. Her name is meaghan and she is 16 yrs old. Until 2 years ago meaghan was a healthy teenaged girl who loved school and had lots of friends and energy. Then in sept/.04 meaghan started getting sick every month with severe abdominal pain and frequent vomiting when she got her monthly cycle. In jan./ 05 meaghan got sick again with severe abdominal pain and vomiting this time it did not let up after a few days like before, after taking her to brampton’s hospital and under going several abdominal and gastro tests including a laparoscopy, which were all normal, they could not give us any answers so we were transferred to sick kids. With an endoscopies done there they found that meaghan had gastro – paresis and duodenal ulcers. She was treated for that and also had a nj tube with limited success and was started on prokinetics which were helpful initially but then her symptoms reoccurred. She also lost approx. 45 lbs between jan and apr that year. Not to mention missed 4 ½ months of grade 10.

Finally in apr/.05 meaghan was released from sick kids and ready to return to a normal life. That is until july/.05 when meaghan once again started getting severe abdominal pain and large frequent vomiting episodes when she got her monthly cycle. Sometimes vomiting as many as 20 times or more an hour! The vomit starts as food and becomes increasingly yellow and or green bile. After several trips to the hospital during these episodes meaghan was diagnosed with possibly cyclic vomiting syndrome, abdominal migraines and the flu. No one really had any answers.
Since her stay at sick kids in ’05 meaghan has been an out patient with the gastro and the gynae teams and has regular visits.

However in aug.06 meaghan became sick and was admitted to sick kids once again. There they did several gastro tests again and did another endoscopies and a colonoscopy and still they cannot find any cause for her pain or her vomiting and was diagnosed with visceral hypersensitivity. The gynae team has said that they are confident that this is not a gynae problem. Upon discharge they prescribed meaghan 10 mg of amitriptyline once a day, 100 mg of b12 daily and omeprazole 20 mg daily. Her stay lasted until sept.15/.06 when she was discharged. In the last 10 days meaghan has still been vomiting and is still in severe pain. This last bout of the illness has caused meaghan to lose over 30 lbs again. She is pale and has no energy.

For fear of dehydration I took her to sick kids again on sept.24/.06 only to be told they would not admit her and to take her home and help her cope and I was also given a prescription of morphine 13 mls every 4 hrs when needed for pain. And still she is vomiting and in extreme pain. Although she tries to drink between bouts of vomiting she still vomits anything that goes in her mouth. She has been reluctant to eat any food these last few days in fear of vomiting more.
I am worried that if something is not done that she may suffer long term effects from all the different medications and I fear she may become malnourished more than she has in the past.
As it is I feel as though I am watching my little girl wither away to nothing. And I also feel she is losing the will to go on fighting until we can get her the help she not only needs but deserves and wants more than anything. I fear she has lost the will to go on.

I pray that you will help us by having a consultation with us, or steer us in the direction of someone who can help meaghan get well.

Your reply would be so much appreciated.

Sincerely yours,
