Q: Anyone With a Baby Born At 33 Weeks?

I am 33 weeks pregnant and have been on bedrest since 16 weeks for preterm labor. I had a cerclage placed at 14 weeks. I have had some strong contractions and lost my mucous plug. I have a bad feeling that her birth is near. Has anyone out there had a baby at 33 weeks? If so, how did the baby do? Any complications? I had the steroid shots at 29 weeks to mature her lungs. Any stories would help.

A good friend of mine had her daughter at just after 33 weeks. The baby is now 14 months old, healthy and perfectly normal. I'll see if I can get my friend on here to answer ur questions.

I hope you can hold out a few more weeks because your baby is still quite premature.

The loss of your mucous plug does not mean labor is coming. It just means there have been some changes in the cervix. The good news is you can grow another mucous plug! Or not. Either way, you can go for weeks after losing the mucous plug before labor begins.

Do they have you taking terbutaline (sp?) or brethine (sp?) to prevent contractions? How often are your contractions? What does your doctor say about that? When will they take out the cerclage?

My fiance's mother had all her babies before 33 weeks. Her first at 32, second at 29 she's the only one with any problems, she has cerebral palsy, the third baby at 32, and the last at 25, she was only 1lb and had to stay at the hospital for a month, but they all are healthy now, ages 26-17.

A baby was born at 25 weeks and only stayed at the hospital for a month? That doesn't sound right to me...

I had a niece at about 33 or 34 weeks. Something like it has been 12 years. And she is a tall healthy 12 year old. She just had to stay in the hostipal for like a month because she had to be over 4lbs before they let her come home.

i lost my mucous plug with my first pregnancy about 3 weeks before delivering, so not too worried about that. I was taking procardia around the clock, but it caused some chest pains, so now I take terbutaline as needed. The contractions come and go. My doctor is just checking me regularly, especially since I live 2 hours from the hospital. They will take the cerclage out at 35 weeks. Thanks for your interest.

Thanks for all the stories girls. I am feeling better about it everyday, especially since I had the steroid shots for her lung development. I had an ultrasound on 9-26 that told me she weighed 4 lbs 15 ounces, so that's pretty big. She is probably 5 pounds now. I will be sure to post once I deliver to update you all. Anymore stories would be great too. Thanks again, all of your stories are encouraging.

I had my son at 34 weeks and I also had the steroid shots at 29 weeks. My son was born healthy as ever and we even got to go home in 24 hours. He weighed in at 6 lbs 15 oz. Can you imagine how big he would've been had he been full term. Even the doctors were amazed. And all ultrasounds showed I was in fact 35 weeks. I had placental abruption so trust me I had alot of ultrasounds.

My daughter was born at 33 weeks due to placental abruption, 4lbs 2oz and 16in. She'll be 14 months on wednesday and she's doing great! She's a fast learner, though she's not walking yet.. It'll be soon!

Having a girl preemie is a definite bonus.. Girls tend to do better in nicu then boys do just because they're lungs do mature faster. Have they given you steriod shots for her lungs yet? I'd request that if you haven't. Generally a 33 weeker will do great and will probably only have difficulty feeding. I lost my mucous plug a week or so before I delivered so just keep an eye on things. Don't hesitate to head to the hospital if you feel like you should. Good luck, if you have any questions, feel free to ask me!

Oh, btw.. My daughter was only in nicu for 15 days. It's hard leaving your baby there, but she'll be home with you in no time!

Thanks for more info. Ladies. I had a serious spell of contractions on fri. Every 2 min. And breathtaking. I took terbutaline and drank two 20oz bottles of water and by the time I got to the hospital 2 hours away, they had became a lot less intense and more erratic. Dehydration maybe. However, this morning I had some spotting. Called and the nurse said it's probably my cervix beginning to dialate and tear the cerclage I had placed to keep my cervix closed. They are going to do an u/s tomorrow to make sure everything is okay.

I did have steroids at 29 weeks, so I am feeling pretty good about it now.

Thanks again for all the stories.

I just had my baby @ 33 weeks last Friday. I was also in and out of the hospital for a month of preterm labor. I had the steroid shots at 30 weeks. She was 5 pds 11 oz which was in her favor. She has made a lot of progress within the last 7 days and keep praying she continues on the route she is going!!! She was put on CPAP to help her lungs for the first couple of days thoen they switched her over just to the nasal prongs to give her a little pressure to breathe on her own. She also had a little bit of jaundice so she was under the lights for a day or two. Now, she is in an incubator with no oxygen help, no IV fluid and is feeding through a feeding tube. She latched on to me yesterday right away for a feeding and also started sucking the bottle. They say that is the hardest because they are doing 3 things at once sucking, swallowing and breathing. So far she has done great with that!! She has to have no "episodes" for 5 consecutive days before she is discharged home. Im hoping soon! It's a long road and it is super hard not having her home but we just have to look at the positive side. She is getting the care she needs. I hope all goes well for you!
