I Need Responses People Today Please Help! Prozac Or Paxil..
Posted: 10-03-06 07:41am

I’ll try to make this suckers as I can. My step mom took paxil for about 8 years, she is now in her 50’s and it made her gain a lot of weight. She didn’t really discuss it with her doctor which was bad, she started to take smaller dosages and then completely stopped…people I need help, she is a complete mental case! She is seeing all these doctors, the doctor said because paxil is such a weight gainer she should try prozac. She took it for about a week and she started having this “pain in her back and all upper body, kind of like its on fire” her doctor has never heard of this and she has to see a nerve specialist. My question is, has anyone experienced this burning sensation on prozac? She is having suicidle thoughts, she has lost her appitite she is looking badly at everything, is this what happens after you stop taking paxil for 8 years? Shes seeing specialist but I said id search the net to calm her down. Please, if anyone has any idea what this burning sensation is or has experienced please help! This woman means the world to me, seeing her this way is killing me. Please help.

Hi there,

i'll try and help you if I can.

Firstly why did your step-mum wean herself off paxil, did she feel she didn't need the medication anymore or was it about the weight issue? Was she seeing the same doctor through out her time on paxil, was it the same doctor that said to try prozac?

The 'burning sensations' aren't triggered by panic attacks are they? This can cause sensations in the head, chest, stomach, back, legs - basically everywhere as though it is burning, these attacks can make you feel dizzy, feel sick, etc.

Go with your step-mum to her local doctor and explain to him/her that better treatment needs to be made now.

Hope i've been some help good luck with it all hun.

I am very sorry to hear about your .Mom!
I am not a Dr.
Most anti-depressent/anti-anxiety meds do have side effects but normally go away after awhile, sometimes more than one week, depending on the patient, but they have been known to help a lot of people, some times it is all about getting the right medicine.
Blinky bill might be right, sometimes anxiety does this to people, I have seen this and if your .Mom will allow you in with her to see the dr you should go in with her, or try to talk to the dr on your own, although with the privacy act they might not say anything.
I am just sorry that you have to go through with this as their is soo much medication on the market. Another thing you might want to ask the dr is to try another med for awhile and give her something to go with it until her system gets used to it for example valium(low dose) as I used to be on an anti-anxiety med and that was the only way I could do it and their are other meds to besides valium that wil kind of calm you or calm the muscle spasms or the burning or pain or whatever the problem is. Then again like I said, I am not a dr, she might have other problems, such as arthritis or a neuro problem, it is good in a way that the dr is checking out the other possibilties.
All the best!

Yes, I agree with sandyallen.

There are plenty of brothers and sisters to prozac and paxil it may take awhile for your mum to find one that works for her, but keep persisting with the doctors, you obviously love and care about your mum a lot and thats great.

Hope all works out for you and don't give up even if the road is a very long one.

Keep us informed, I would be interested in what the doctors say.
