What to Tell An Employer? Posted: 10-03-06 18:30pm
Okay, so I found out in college I was
dyslexic. I am very good at reading and
writing. Except I am absolutley terrible
at math, even basic math like adding and
subtracting I have to take longer to think
about than others. Also, I can read fast
but I have a hard time comprehending what
I am reading and when I talk sometimes
what I am thinking about what I am going
to say in my head comes out backwards from
my mouth. Like two words are mixed up or
whatever. I have a hard time reading a
clock and my lefts and rights I am always
getting mixed up. My problem is I dont
have insurance and have never had any sort
of treatment or education on how to deal
with my dyslexia and could use some advice
or recommendations. Also, about the
workplace. I am looking for work and
found myself not applying for some jobs
that I may think dyslexia might affect.
So, another question is, do I let the
employer know I have this during an
interview or after I am hired, or how do I
even mention a thing like this? I am
lost at words...

When to Tell An Imployer Posted: 10-10-06 16:59pm
I've not long found out i'm dislexic at
college too, I have similar problems but I
have the literacy problems too, I also
find it hard to know when and if to
mention it I feel odd about now having to
put i'm dislexic on a application seen as
I have filled many in over the summer of
2005 looking for part time jobs and never
even thought that the next summer ill have
to say I have a learning difficulty,
luckily my new job I have just got I am a
kennel attendant at a greyhound racing
track so they don't need to know if I have
poor literacy skills etc or not, I guess
it depends on what the job consists of
weather you need to tell the employer that
you have dislexia right away or not

I dont believe you need to tell your
employer unless you feel you need to. As
long as it will not affect your work then
my opinion is it is none of their
business. If you do decided to tell them
make sure you tell someone that you trust
and talk with them about it and how
dyslexia affects you specifically. That
way they will have a better understanding
of it and your specific condition.
Good Luck

If you find your self having to tell an
employer about your dislexia, remember to
try and relate some of the benifits that
dislexia can bring, and put them into the
persific skills the job is looking for.
ie. if your going for a pc job tell the
employer becouse of dislexia you have come
to find a pc being a big part in your
life, for spellchecking etc you have
rfound that your very sucsesfull with pcs.
or over coming problems, or you have come
to find your self a very people person due
to empathy that you have found since
finding you are dislexic. it has worked of
for me in lots of diff ways. also in the
uk, a lot of jobs have to fill a qouter of
people with disabilitys, and dislexia is a
from of disability in the uk. done ever
see it as a downfall for you. i would not
change being dislexia for anything. its a
gift, things we find simple to do others
find very hard. our out look on life is
one of beaty and visions of art etc.
most employers would not mind if your
dislexic as long as you can explain why
the skills that dislexics have can be a
great benifit to the work place.
a great eye for detail, dyslexia has
helped me work better to deadlines as i
have come to find a great way of making
big problems into bite size problems that
are easyer to over come and complete goals
and tasks to a persific time scale. im
sure if you anerlize your goals and skills
you can sell your self regardless of
dislexia.
IMO something that others may see as a
negitive, it can always been turned round
as a possitive.
i never use to mention it o employers, and
i never had any problems, iv never seen it
as that bigger deal and i dont let it rule
my life if i wanna try a different job
then id just go for it, if i had any
problems id just ask for help.
but my last interview i did bring it up
and they were very supportive, they gave
me the job and offered me help and support
through nursing training. its not like it
use to be people with dyslexia arnt looked
down on like thry use to be, and it they
have a problem with it i dont think i
would want to work for them.
let it come up naturaly if they mention
training just sayy something like im very
commited to any training relating to the
post since i was told i was dyslexic iv
worked hard to improve myself and improve
myself as much as possible and your not
affraid too ask for help. thats what i
said and it must not of put them off.
good luck

I come from a families of dyslexics, even
though I am not dyslexic. Out of the six
of us kids, two are dyslexic, as well as
my dad.
My dad hires a lot, (he's a managing
engineer), and he says that he would
rather that a dyslexic person keep it to
themselves, because he would think that
they were playing for pity, or threatening
to call discrimination--yes dyslexia fits
under the classification for disabled and
thus under classification for no
discrimination. So, as a hiring dyslexic,
he says that he would be more impressed to
find out later and see that you deal with
it and are responsible.
