My 36 Week Appointment...
Posted: 10-04-06 13:55pm

First of all, I can't believe i'm 36 weeks (and 1 day to be exact)!

So I had my appointment today. I've gained a disgusting amount of weight but i'm not all that worried about losing it since i've lost 80 pounds in the past. My doctors don't seem all that concerned either, they've never mentioned my weight.

I had my group b swab done. Just vaginal, no anal, so that was nice. While she was doing that I asked if she was going to check for dilation or anything and she said they don't normally do that until the week i'm due but if I wanted her to she would. I figured I was already naked from the waist down so why not. Well, my cervix is still pretty high but very soft, 20% effaced and closed. I don't really know what that means though (the 20% effaced part). I thought some progress would have been made since I have crazy contractions all night long some nights. Oh well, I guess I shouldn't have her check if it's going to frustrate me.

From feeling she said she thought he was about 7 and a half pounds. Shocked and I still have 4 more weeks! I'm also measuring 2 weeks ahead. So she said if i'm still measuring ahead at my appointment next week i'll get an ultrasound and we'll go from there. I was so excited about the prospect of another u/s that I didn't ask what would happen. Induction perhaps?

I'm so excited. The countdown is finally on! I can't wait until he gets here!

it basically means that your cervix has thinned out 20% of the way. This is a good sign as it means it is preparing for labour. Still 80% to go though sweetie! Its a positive sign though... Smile

*edit- to add: the cervix usually thins out once labour has started so don't be discouraged. You could come at any time! Congratulations though hun- your nearly there!*

In my class im taking they teach us (like becky said) effaced is how thin your cervix is 100% being none and 0% being all the way. They also check the dialation, and they also have a number I think ranging from -3 to 3 that tells how far down the baby is down into your pelvis. When you are at 0 the babys head is level with the two nubs on either side of your pelvis bone... So when you go into labor you will hear things all the time like.. 50% effaced, 5 cm diallated, -2 position. Its the three measurements they take to tell how far you are progressing.

Sounds like your poping soon good luck!!! <3

Doctors run different ways of measuring effacement though. Some say 20% is with 80% to go and some say 20% is with 20% to go (if you understand what i'm trying to say) you should speak to your midwife/doctor to find out what they specifically mean.

It's amazing how different people are. I'm due the day before you and i'm 80% with 20% to go and I was 1 cm almost 2 weeks ago. I go back friday. I'm feeling so much more pressure down there. Her dresser and swing came in today, so after my husband puts it together i'll be ready. I can remember when we both had just found out we were pregnant. It's so exciting!

At my Dr.'s office as soon as they do the beta strep test they start checking for dilation and effacement. They did mine at 33 weeks, then checked again at 35, and I go back friday to get checked.
