Q: Can I be Pregnant? My cycle is irregular...
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 7th, 2006
i wanted to know if i can still be pregnant. I emailed you a while ago and i got no reply my question online seemed to have been removed because i can't find it. I missed my period for three months and throughout that time i took 6 home pregnancy tests which all came up negative. the doctor put me on provera and my period only came 6 days after finishing the provera. So far my period has been normal, very heavy and a lot of clotting. today is the 6th day of my period and it is very light. However, i have been feeling like i have a bit of nausea for the past two days. today was the only day i was ok and i think it's because i am not focussing too much on being pregnant. is that possible to make myself sick over it? My question to you is whether or not i can be pregnant. I have always had irregular periods. i spotted twice in july and my period didn't come until i used provera. the last pregnancy test i took was at the doctors office on the 19th of september whch was my third month of my skipped period. The test was negative. what is your opinion?

Yes, I think I found your question from September 23rd. First, here is the question and answer I posted at that time:

QUESTION: i have been skipping my period for three mths now. the last time i had sex was in the middle of june. at first the guy did not have a condom on he went in me and came out immediately....My period was due on the 24th of june and it did not come. However, it spotted twice in July on the 9th and 29th. At first i was not concerned until i realised i actually did spot the first time. As a result of this i bought a hpt which came out negative. the second time i spotted i took another test which also came out negative. Until the end of august i would have taken 5 pregnancy test in all. They all came out negative but i still have no period. Being worried i went to the doctor at my university this week where she gave me another pregnancy test making it six test in total. Again it came out negative. i am really worried and needed to know if i can be pregnant. The doctor i went to asked me if i am under stress and i told her yes with my family and relationship. My period has always been irregular it is always a week or two late and i have skipped two mths when i was younger. Can you please reply to my question i am really worried. The doctor at the university put me on provera. She said that after three mths if i took a pregnancy test it would have shown up if i was in fact pregnant. Is this true?

ANSWER:

It seems likely that you are not pregnant because 6 pregnancy tests have shown up negative. Three months are more than enough time for a pregnancy test to indicate a pregnancy. According to the symptoms you report (missed periods, spotting), you might have a functional (hormonally active) ovarian cyst that is blocking menstruation. You'll need anultrasound examination to confirm an ovarian cyst, if there is one present. Functional cysts usually disappear spontaneously after 2-3 missed periods. Oral contraceptives (provera) can be used to recover the menstrual cycle.

And here is the answer to the new question:

Early pregnancy can be confirmed only with a positive pregnancy test and a vaginal ultrasound. Irregular cycles and spotting are not signs of pregnancy but signs of a hormonal disturbance. Sometimes functional ovarian cysts can cause cycle irregularity, but only temporarily (2-3 months). Irregular cycles can also be due to a disturbance in the control mechanisms of the axis hypothalamus-pituitary gland-ovaries. Oral contraceptives (pills) are given to establish regular cycles. If cycle irregularity continues you may need help from a gynecologist-endocrinologist.
