Bleeding during sex: related to BC or something else? Posted: 10-09-06 20:24pm
Here's my bcp history in a nutshell...
Started on Ortho Tricyclen 4 years ago
when I was 18. Did well with it, no
problems. Took it for about 2 1/2 years.
My obgyn wanted me to try Ortho Lo when it
came out. The whole year I was on it I
would always bleed during sex (no pain) if
the sex took place the week before my
period. I told my obgyn about it and he
switched me back to Trinessa (generic of
Ortho Tricyclen).
In April of this year I asked him to
switch me because I was becoming really
depressed and crying easily and thought it
could be due to the pill. He put me on
Yasmin. I took it for the months of May
and June. In June my "problem" came back
and I bled during sex a week before my
period.
I didn't want to deal with that bleeding
again so I started taking Trinessa again
in July. Then sex was ok sometimes and I
only bled during sex once or twice during
the switch.
I went to my doctor and he seems to still
think it is hormone related. I've had two
clear paps since the beginning of this
problem. My dr. told me to continue on
Trinessa and it should straighten out.
I'm really just worried. Is it really
hormones causing this? Do I just need a
higher estrogen pill? Thanks for your
help.

Bleeding during sex (contact bleeding)
should be taken very seriously because it
can be caused by a lesion on the cervix.
You should visit your gynecologist when
are experiencing the bleeding so s/he can
locate the origin of such bleeding
(vagina, cervix, and uterus). A vaginal
examination, colposcopy, and Pap-test
should also be performed to exclude any
organic reason (lesion) for the contact
bleeding. If there is no organic lesion on
the genital organs, then you might
consider a hormonal reason for bleeding.
Hormones can cause bleeding, but such
bleeding in not related to sexual contact.
It doesn't seem that you will need pills
with a bigger dose of estrogen because
those pills have more side effects.
