Late Period- Please Help
Posted: 10-11-06 07:43am

I woke up this morning again hoping I would have my period but it is offically 4 days late now. I have had sexual intercourse since my last period, even though it was protected I fear the results. My period usually come between every 26-29 days which is not a perfect schedule. I know that stress can be a huge factor, and I moved to college about 1 month ago, 7 hours away from my family and boyfriend. My boyfriend and I have had a few problems over the past month regarding me being so far away, however I don't know if this is enough stress or not. We ususally work everything out very quickly so it's not like I feel sad all day on any occasion. I would just like to now how many days is normal before I should really freak out, which im already starting to do. I really have no symptoms of a period right now, just a little tender breats.

Ok first things first.

What type of protection did/do you use?
If condoms has one broken recently?
If b/c pill have you forgotten to take any recently?
Have you recently started or changed b/c pill?
When was the first day of your last period?
Have you recently lost or gained weight?
Have you had late or absent periods before?

There are many factors affecting your periods, and having recently moved away from family could be a big contributor.
Also if for some reason you did not ovulate this month, that would contribute to your (as present) missing period.

If you use a "first response" pregnancy test you can test as long as 4 days before your period is due.
Most other tests are accurate from the day your period is due.

We used condoms and they have not broke. I am not on the pill at all. The day my last period started was 9/10/06 and it was 5 days long. Recently I really have no changed by eating habits at all and I exercise maybe once a week if that, so my weight has stayed the same.

What would make me not ovulate this month?

I might go buy a pregnancy test today its just that I am very scared to find out the results especially if there positive.

Do you need any more information?

Thank you for your help so far!!

Personally i'd wait a few more days, maybe a week? Cos like you said periods can often be a bit late and its fine.

If you have used condoms and they have not broken or slipped off or anything like that then your risk of pregnancy is very low.
Most pregnancies that occur while using condoms are down to either the condom breaking or slipping off or other "mis-use" of the condom.

Not ovulating could be as simple as the body not having resources to sustain a pregnancy (ie a very hectic and stressed time) or could just be one of those teenage hormone hicups.

I'd say give your period a few more days 4-7 to appear then take a test if nothing shows up.

If the test is negative and you are still worried make an appt with your doctor otherwise wait and see if the next one shows up, then take it from there. If that one skips as well and you don't have a positive pregnancy test then you will need to see your doc anyway to rule out any problems.

Thank you, I will wait a few more days and see what happens. This sunday I might go buy a test and that way it will be a full week late.

Hope all goes well..

If you know anything else please let me know, I would like a lot of opinions..

Well, opinions are just that, opinions. No one can say whether you are pregnant or not. Only a pregnancy test can say that for sure.

As far as stress goes: did you know starting college and moving away from your family is one of the most stressful times you'll go through? It is probably very stressful for you! This is why there are the freshman 15 (lbs) and the high rate of college freshman who leave college and return home after the first trimester! This is more than likely your first time on your own - even if you live in a dorm, you still aren't living with your family.

You are eating differently. You are living differently. You are having problems with your boyfriend. And all of that adds up to stress.

There is more than likely a free clinic on or near your college campus that you can visit and get a pregnancy test done for free. If it would put your mind at ease, it might be a good idea. Either you can stress about 'maybe' being pregnant - or you could know for sure.

Good luck!!

I went through something very similar recently - my period was late by about four days, and I attribute it to me stressing out over stupid crap, including the chance of pregnancy when it was extremely unlikely. I've had my period get screwed up due to stress, especially when I stress out around the time my period should come.

Even if you miss your period entirely this month I wouldn't even say to worry then. As others have said, you may just have not ovulated this month, or you're ovulating later than normal. There are countless factors that can affect your cycle, even if you're fairly regular - the littlest hormonal flux can knock your cycle out of whack. Also, you're at that age when your body is preparing for childbirth, even if you don't want it to. Your periods may still be weird for a few more years.

Lots of girls your age in college will have cycle changes due to the stress of being away from home and being on your own. I wouldn't be shocked if you missed your period for a few months (not due to pregnancy). If you're extremely concerned, does your school have a health clinic? Are there any planned parenthood clinics near where you go to college? You can get free pregnancy testing at either location.

Judging by your description, I would say your chances of pregnancy are very nil. Relaxing at this point is easier said than done - you may be more relaxed if you have a pregnancy test with a negative result in front of you.

Ok so now it has been 6 days and im starting to wonder because...

- my boobs feel tendered
- I have discharge
- I have cramps
they feel like period cramps although I have never experienced cramps before my period, I usually get them the 1st or 2nd day into my period and there anywhere from mild to hurting badly

so I was wondering if anyone could tell me what this means??

All we can tell you is that you should test. Anything more is speculation.

Test. Finding out one way or another is better than driving yourself crazy analyzing your symptoms.
