Q: Ectopic?!?!

Ok I had my first doctors appointment and it wasn't good. They said that I look like i'm only 5 wks along (my period said I was 7). But the doctor thinks that I might just have an ectopic pregnancy!!! I'm so scared!! My blood test results aren't in yet. So it's just nerve recking!!! I've just been crying and crying!!!

I've been cramping alot, but was told that that is normal, and then today I started spotting, it was very very light, but i'm still so scared. Could I possibly be having an ectopic pregnancy?

They said 'ectopic' pregnancy without doing anything else? No ultrasound, etc?

Maybe you ovulated later than you think? Sometimes pregnancy is tricky that way.

Good luck. And let us know what the doctor says.

How would they know you're only 5wks without knowing the results of your bloodtest or anything? I don't see how they'd think you're ectopic without doing an ultrasound or anything like that.

Mmm strange - I thought the only way to tell if it was ectopic was through an ultrasound. My doc originally thought I was having an ectopic due to pain more than anything else and sent me for an ultrasound immediately to rule it out.

Wait for you blood results but I wouldnt jump to conclusions until you have an ultrasound.

I can't believe they would say it might be ectopic and then just send you home. Ectopic pregnancies are dangerous! And why would they assume you're only 5 weeks without an ultrasound to confirm dates? How did they come to think this?

I hope everything turns out okay for you. Good luck!

Because there wasn't a heart beat (i'm guessing). But thats why she said that it could most likely just be that i'm only 5 wks

You need to confirm with the doctor about why she would suggest ectopic.

Goodluck, I hope everything works out for you.

Based on what you've said, it sounds like ectopic isn't an issue - but rather, your dates.

Not seeing a heartbeat is one thing, but having an ectopic or tubal pregnancy is entirely different and can be dangerous.

Sometimes your ovulation/implantation can occur later than you think, making your pregnancy less far along than your lmp would indicate.

I'm hoping that is the case for you. Good luck!!

If you had an ectopic pregnancy, you would probably have noticed one-sided pelvic or abdominal pain by now. What made your doctor think you have a tubal pregnancy?

Did your doctor say anything about symptoms that would indicate a potential tubal pregnancy? Some symptoms of tubal pregnancy are vaginal bleeding (including spotting), missed period, breast tenderness, nausea, and occasionally pain in the shoulder. It's basically the same symptoms as a normal pregnancy, with a few exceptions. Also, have you taken any home pregnancy tests? Sometimes ectopic pregnancies will not give a positive result on the home tests.

I'm not trying to frighten you or anything - in all honesty, I seriously seriously doubt you have an ectopic pregnancy going on. It seems quite irritating that your doctor would brush off a condition such as ectopic pregnancy (which can be fatal if the tube ruptures).

If you've had an ultrasound &seen the embryo in your uterus, then you don't need to be afraid that you have an ectopic pregnancy. Unless somehow you've got one in your uterus &one in your tubes.. Which .I don't think is a real option.

I had two scans 9 and 13 weeks which showed .Oliver to be "in uteri" (or in the uterus) and yet when I eventually got a scan at almost 19 weeks they thought he might be ectopic (he wasn't but that's another and very long story).

I have had an ectopic pregnancy and they are not always tubal and they are not always severe pain.
My ectopic was on the scar tissue on the outside of my uterus - the pain comes when a tube ruptures which obviously won't happen if the pregnancy is not in the tube.

And to add, a doctor will not send a patient home with a suspected ectopic pregnancy as this condition can be fatal.

And the difference between 5 and 7 weeks makes sense too.
5 weeks would be the gestational age of a 7 week pregnancy - you conceive in week 2 of your "pregnancy".

Ok my docor called today and........She said that my hormone level (i think it was that one) was really low. So I have to go today and pick up some medication that will hopefully raise it. Then I have to go back next week and take another blood test to see if it has improved. If it hasn't then they will perform another ultrasound. But if it did go up I just have to keep taking the medication until i'm 12 weeks.
