Trying to Understand the Cycle
Posted: 10-15-06 12:26pm

My husband comes from a family with mental illness. I am pretty confident that he has sometime of illness himself. Researching it online it has to be a bi-polar disorder at what extreme I do not know.

To help understand his moods... Some days he is really really happy. Things will set him off on other days. He gets angry a lot and wants more control. He spends money in short periods of time (hundreds of dollars on things he "needs"). He goes up to his room and spends a lot of time up there watching tv getting away from the family. I let him go thinking that it will help him but it doesnt. It doesnt help his mood at all. He is angry at everything and there is no amount of being positive that I can be to help the situation.

It is almost like he feels the world is out to get him. There is no making him happy.

Some weeks if he is spending money all week he is in a great mood. Buying things for the kids....Etc.

We have been married for 20+ years and I have never seen him like this for this amount of time.

I am sure that this post makes no sense. It is very difficult to put into words the way he has been.

It sounds as if your husband does exhibit signs of the bipolar illness. Typically the illness starts in the mid to late 20's but can appear later in life and does get worse with time. What you described is a typical bipolar pattern of behavior. I would try and get him in to see somebody who can officially diagnose him and get him the help he needs.
