Hi, I was wondering is it okay to start
birth control for the first time on the
5th day start? I was browsing and ortho
tri cyclen lo (i'm not using ortho lo)
said that it had to be a sunday or day 1
start. But another website (a college
health center site) said that a day 5 is
just fine (but has no benefits) and that
most women start on sundays so that they
will get their period during the week
instead of during the weekend.
Thanks,
dee

You can start your birth control at any
time, unless it is a tri-phasic.
Starting on day one (first day of
bleeding) is so that you get immediate
protection. This give minimal disruption
of the cycle.
Starting on the sunday after your period
begins, is an easy day to remember so you
can keep track of which pill you are on,
but you need to use condoms or such for
the first 7 days after starting it.
Disruption should be minimal.
Starting on day 5 is fine but you will
need to use a back up (condoms etc) for
the first 7 days. Disruption should still
be minimal.
If you start the birth control later than
the first week of your period it will
probably mess up your cycle for a little
while, as your body adjusts.
If it is a tri-phasic b/c pill then you
need to try and integrate as soon as
possible to your own cycle and follow the
insert in the pack and your doc/gyn's
instructions.

Not true, tri phasic pills may be started
similarly to regular birth control
pills.
Ortho tri cyclen/lo, are both very popular
among women, so i'll use the us
prescribing info on it for educational
reasons.
With this is mind however, most doctors do
reccomend using birth control pills as
soon as your period starts, but it is not
necessary.
The doc I work feels that there are less
breakthorugh bleeding problems when you
start the pill on your period, so she
advises to start on the period =)
