He Told Me I Have to Just Lay There!! Posted: 10-25-06 17:49pm
Ok this whole pregnancy I have been bery
worried about the delivery portion.
Something about a babies head coming out
of that small hole bothers me. Ok so
today at my 39 wk appt. The doc told me
that because of my past brain surgery ( I
have acm type 1). He feels that is only
safe if I dont push.. So I have to have a
epidural and lay there letting nature push
her out with them supporting with forceps
or a vaccum. Has anyone had to do this??
I just never heard of laying back and
chilling the entire delivery.

Well, in the 'old' days, they used to
knock mothers out completely and let
nature take it's course. That was when
fathers waited in the waiting room and
weren't allowed in to watch the birth. It
wasn't until the onset of 'natural' child
birth that men were allowed in the
hospital rooms.
You won't feel any pain if you have an
epidural, and you body will naturally push
the baby out. Pushing just helps get the
baby out faster. If they are using
forceps and suction, that will work too.

You will be fine, your dr sounds like
he/she knows what the dr is doing. Do you
know if you are having a boy or a girl and
what you plan on naming the baby?

I would get as many other professional
opinions you can. Maybe if you feel
comfortable there are other ways to go
about your birth

If you had brain surgery I think you
should listen to your doc and not push.
During labor I pushed really hard, a
little too hard actually. I ruptured
blood vessels in both of my eyes so they
were all blood red like some kind of
halloween monster and gave myself a
ferocious headache. They actually told
me to ease off with the pushing. They
had to "help" me along with the vaccuum
cuz he wasn't coming out. I can see why
he doesn't think that it's safe for you to
push.

I had brain surgery too, I had brain
cancer removed when I was 15. And a
history of epilepsy and my doctor is
conerned about the delivery too. He is
nervous that the contractions will cause a
seizure.
