asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 26th, 2006
I went for an US yesterday and ended up having one vaginally ,they found I had a tilted uterus/womb and that i had a sac measuring at around 7 weeks but it was empty,I have to go for a scan next week as its their protocol to rescan a week later.No-one has given me any info, what are the chances of seeing a heartbeat next week,as they told me it doesnt look good and they were acting as if im going to miscarry but I wasnt told anything, any advice would be thoroughly helpful

many thanks xx

Pregnancy Answer A1739
A fetus's heart pulsations are normally seen on an ultrasound for the first time during the 7th-8th week of pregnancy. In your case, it seems that the levels of human chorion-gonadotropin (HCG) should be also monitored. HCG levels double every 2 days during the first 7 weeks of pregnancy. If the levels of HCG don’t rise or fall and there are no heart pulsations on an ultrasound, then the embryo may be dead. There is nothing you can do but wait for the exams.
