What Is Asthma? Posted: 10-27-06 00:55am
I ask this, somewhat, stupid question
because at aged 10, I was diagnosed with
asthma.
However, I recently came across a thread
on this forum, which spoke about not being
able to take a deep, satisfying breath.
Now, i've had that same problem ever since
I was 5.
I've been on 3 different reliever inhalers
and non of them have worked.
Now, most (if not all) of my "asthma
attacks" mean that I have this struggle to
take a deep, satisfying breath which was
spoken about in said thread. Is that an
asthma attack? Does an asthma attack mean
that I struggle to take a deep satisfying
breath? I thought it was, but i'm not
sure as non of the inhalers i've been on
have ever helped me.
My doctor just does not believe me when I
tell him my inhaler doesn't work. In
fact, it makes me worse. It gives me a
cough, fills my thoat with mucus and makes
it longer for my breathing to get better.
I'm really questioning whether or not I
actually have asthma now after finding
that thread.
So, to all the folks with asthma out
there, could you please explain to me what
an asthma attack is, what it feels like
and is what I described an asthma attack?
Oh, and also, my doctor told me that the
only medication for asthma (besides
preventers) is salbutamol. Is this true?
It seems a little unlikely.
Thanks

Asthma attacks can be different....I have
had ones where I could not stop coughing,
litterally, and could barely breath any of
the medicine they tried to give me, or
ones, like yours, where u can not take a
deep breath, most of those though are
after I swim (i swim competitavly) im
not sure about the medication.....After my
attacks I am usually on steroids

If your doctor isnt beleiving what you are
telling him/her your best bet is to find
another doctor.. Asthma isnt really
something to mess around with depending on
how bad a person has it. I have really
bad asthma.. Im hospitalised every year
around the same time. And im put on
steriods atleast 6-7 times a year..
I have both a lung doctor and a regular
pcp.
I take both an albuteral inhaler and a
steroid perventetive inhaler called
advare.
I can tell when im having an attack cuz
ill weeze.. Ill hear sort of a squeeking
sound comming from my chest that I can
hear and most people around me can hear.
Ill get shortness of breath and ill cough.
Its been hard because in highschool I was
a cheerleader and with all the running and
exercise it was hard to control my asthma.
When I cough anything up, usually im
getting sick. Im either getting broncitis
or phmonia(sp)
goodluck! Id definatly look into a new
pcp though!
