Q: Rude On Smoking While Preggo Topic. . .

The "smoking while preggo" topic was closed (maybe for obvious reasons), so I want to ask you all a question regarding doing what's "best" for babies. How much research regarding childbirth did you do when you were pregnant? Did you really look into what's best for your unborn children, especially as concerns methods of childbirth? Although this really doesn't concern smoking while pregnant, how many of you believe that such birth methods (including epidural, induction and hospital births in general) are really safe? I've been considering people's beliefs about keeping unborn children safe and reading a lot and I really am not sure that most women are aware of their options at the time of birth and which are most safe. I would really like your guys' opinions about how much education women really get before they give birth, or do they just believe that doctors always know best. I really want your honest opinions about your birth stories and experiences in hospitals versus home births. . . I saw a lot of judgement reactions to someone asking for help to quite smoking during pregnancy, so I would like to know who really paid attention to the most safe options for their unborn children, as far as labor/childbirth was concerned.

Childbirth is no easy task, so women want to use medicine to their advantage and make it as quick, easy, and painless as possible...Usually. I know there are those selfish individuals who will ask to have labor induced to have the baby born on a certain day, or so it's before before or after a certain day (i.E. "sandra bullock's birthday is in two days, and even though i'm only 35 weeks along I wanna be induced so my baby has sandra's b-day! Tee hee!"). This has never made any sense to me.

Some women do worry about what goes into their bodies while they incubate their fetuses, but others don't really care because they don't want to sacrifice things like alcohol, cigs, drugs, and so forth for the child - it's sometimes too much to ask, especially of people who may have mild to severe addictions. This is not true of all women, but for some it is...Makes you wonder how good of a parent they will be if they can't at least try to quit puffing the magic dragon so they don't birth a drug baby.

I haven't had my baby yet so I can't comment on birth stories. But as far as what's safe for my baby - I can't really say either. I might be getting induced this week (will find out today) due to the risk of infection as my membranes have ruptured and are leaking - that is a safer option for my baby rather than letting me go another few weeks and him ending up sick. If I go to have a natural birth and he stresses or has the chord around his head then obviously a c-section is going to be the safest for my son. Obviously I will do whatever will be the safest and I guess I cant really say what is the safest until the time comes.

I went natural with #1 and had a shot of gravol with #2 and a small amount of nubain gravol/pain meds that did nothing but help me relax(got really anxious.)

i personally will never get an epidural for the fact being I have known too many people who have symptoms and a friend who is half parylysed. My mother and other friends all suffer from headaches/backpain since they recieved the epidural!

I did *tons* of research for my birth and went totally drug free. I had no medical intervention (no iv, no epidural, no gas, no episiotomy, I preffered to tear *naturally*)

so, not everyone is "uneducated" about birth. I knew exactly what I wanted and what I didn't want.

I recommend research as much as possible about birth while pregnant!!

I haven't had my baby yet, either. But have, &still do, read an excessive amount of literature on pregnancy &.I do watch what .I eat, &what goes into my body. I don't smoke, drink, do any type of drugs, .I hardly even take .Tylenol.. I've cut out almost all caffeine &artificial sugars, &almost anything that's "unnatural" .. As far as birth goes, my doctor is a very... Earthy woman, .I'd say. She's .Indian &very big on fate &letting nature take it's course. I have read a lot about epidurals &.I will choose to have one, if my doctor suggests that's what's best.

I would, will, &do do what's best for my child. &.I always will. I'm a mother. That's what mothers do. Or at least should do.

Omg terra lmao!!
Thanks that made me laugh lol

megathome ofcourse people are going to say that stuff about smoking while pregnant, most people feel strongly about it. The health experts have shown how bad it is. Imo its stupid to compare a regular smoker to someone who drank the occasional coffee, or did whatever birth method you said isnt safest! You cant compare them rationally. Smoking is way worse than any of those. With the birth stuff you mentioned, if the birthing options werent safe enough we wouldn't be allowed to do them. Everyones had their say on the subject, its silly to drag it on and on.

(i know I just contributed to it but I had to say something cos terra's lil story cracked me up lol)

I've never done drugs or smoked, so that was never an issue for me. And I only drink socially, so that was not a problem to give up. But before I got pregnant I never minded much if someone smoked around me, and once I became pregnant I wouldn't go near anyone who was. I refused to take medication during my pregnancy, even doctor-approved medicine like .Tylenol. But that was my preference. I tried to limit my caffiene intake (semi-successfully) and otherwise ate a healthy diet.

As far as labor, I went as long as I could without an epidural, and only accepted one when I felt completely out of control. I had already been in labor for over 24 hours, and the epidural relaxed me to a point where I could calmly push my baby out. I had no negative reactions to the epidural and neither did my daughter. I was given a prescription for .Tylenol 3 which I did not fill, and only took extra-strength .Tylenol when my after-labor pains were extreme.

I am also exclusively breastfeeding my daughter, which I am doing completely for her benefit and health. I still do not drink, even socially, and maintain a healthy diet to ensure that my breastmilk is untainted and my body is healthy enough to continue to produce it. And I do not allow anyone to smoke near or around my child.

Everything I have done has been for my daughter.

actually allie your wrong, caffieine is just as bad as smoking and can cause miscarriage

just so you gals know she drank over the limit of caffeine as per her post 3-4 redbull a day so yes cafeine is a drug but its is on the same list as nicotine
