Q: Hair Dye!

Hey babies.

Happy .Halloween!!!

I have a quick question.
For .Halloween, .I'm going as a black cat.
&.I want to dye my hair a natural black.
I've been wanting to dye my hair anyway,
so this seems like a perfect opportunity.

&.I know they say don't dye your hair
in the 1st trimester.. But what about the 2nd?
I'm 20wks & 1 day. Should .I play it safe &
not dye my hair, or is it okay to do?

As far as I know you shouldn't colour your hair at all while pregnant as my sister is a hairdresser it gets into your bloodstream and therefore the babies. I got mine done a couple of weeks ago when I didn't know I was pregnant though

Yeah, .I just looked up a whole bunch of stuff about it &everything .I've read says that not even close to enough would get into your bloodstream to reach your baby, so it's not a problem to do it. But not that many studies have been done, so maybe .I'll just not do it.

Mel, .I love your new avatar!

It's fine, they just say to do it in a well ventilated area. I think the reason most say not to do it is because you don't know how it will turn out, like if you were going for blonde you could end up with green. But I think it's more like perms and chemical treatments that could turn out badly.

We want pics of you in costume!

Hon, there's two schools of thought on it. Some say it's okay after the first trimester. Some say that it isn't okay at all. This issue actually started a pretty nasty discussion here before back in like january or something. My personal opinion on it is that it's safe in the second trimester as long as you use common sense and 1) do it in a well ventilated area, 2) wear gloves to protect your skin (which you'd do anyway), 3) don't leave it on any longer than necessary, & 4) rinse your scalp thoroughly (which you'd also do anyway). I died my hair in my second and third trimesters( I have brown hair and I hate it). Chu has no birth defects. Have fun!

.Awh!! Me too! Quick quick! Jump in your car!
I'll meet you halfway!! Lmao.

&.Thanks .Kay! If .I do it, .I'm definitely opening windows everywhere &.I always wear gloves. I think .I'll just hold off, though. Chris might be mad if .I dye my hair, lol, he loves the color it is now. Which is, for the first time in years, my natural color! Hahaha.

Scientifically, there is no way that the dye could enter your bloodstream unless you have an open wound on your head. I took a biology class a little while back when I was going for a bachelor's of science (before I got pregnant obviously). Let me ask you this... If you were to take a permanent marker and write on your arm with it, would you think that it would enter your bloodstream? No. It would not. There is no scientific way that it is possible unless you have an open wound. Your skin is made of several layers of tissues. Your veins are located below the layers of your skin. The marker would seep into the layers of your skin, but your veins are protected by a coat of film to protect intruders (such as hair dye and markers). I discussed what I learned with my uncle who is a pathologist. He said that it is fact that the dye will not get into the bloodstream. The only reason doctor's caution the use is because of the fumes that the chemicals give off. It has nothing to do with the dye entering your bloodstream.

Thanks, .Meg!

Lol, my dad used to yell at my sisters &.I when we were little. We'd write things on our hands in marker or pen or something, &.He'd get furious &tell us that the ink was going to get into our bloodstream &poison us. Rolling Eyes

You could use a black headband and some black paper and make some cat ears. They do have natural hair dyes that do not contain all of the chemicals, ask your nurse at your dr's office, see what she says about coloring your hair, heck, it looks dark like it is. It is your choice though.
Don't forget the pic!
Happy halloween to everyone!
Good luck!

Lol my mom did to, she stopped when I started pre-med tho:) b/c then I could prove her wrong hehehe... I dyed my hair when I was about 20 weeks. Most people don't think of it that way, but if they did, they would know how impossible it is to affect the baby. It's like how they say not to paint while pregnant. It's not b/c if you touch the paint it will enter the bloodstream, it's b/c of the powerful fumes that the chemicals give off. Inhaling the fumes can be somewhat dangerous if you are directly inhaling them. The only reason it is dangerous, however, is because of the effect it has on your respiratory system. You're not just smelling the chemicals, your inhaling the particles into your lungs. It's like cigarette smoke, but invisible. Smile

If you google it you'll find different things. I just did cos ive heard of long term use of hair dyes might be linked to cancer. Here's something I found-

dyes that are intended to "stay put" contain materials that actually penetrate the hair shaft. They can in some cases add minerals such as lead (black dyes), manganese (brown dyes) and copper (red dyes)

for the long term, we have very recently learned from the london hazards centre that permanent dyes can enter the bloodstream from the scalp, and can be found in the urine 40 minutes after the hair is dyed. Recent research has linked them to bladder cancer; over 4,000 women a year are known to suffer from balder cancer, and 1,600 deaths are caused by it, with a high number of hair-dressers being included in these.

Because the dye enters the blood, we advise people very strongly to avoid hair dyes while the ova is ripening, and during pregnancy and breast-feeding. It is really only sensible to keep from all avoidable causes of cancer once you are a mother - and obviously, if you decide not to dye, it will be doing your hair-dresser a good turn too!

The wash-in/wash-out dyes appear at the moment to be less suspect, but we have insufficient research on them to be able to give total reassurance. We will try and give further updates in forthcoming foresight newsletters.

so it can get in your bloodstream through the actual hair not the skin?
