Help!!! Im Sooo Confused! Posted: 11-07-06 21:43pm
I went to the doctor today for a check up
kind of thing. I mostly went to talk to
the doctor about birth control. But
anyways, when I had called to make the
appointment the receptionest lady had
asked a few questions, one of which was if
I had ever had a pap smear. When I had
told her no she said that I needed to have
one. I also had never been tested for any
stds. So when I made the appointment, it
was for a pap, std tests, and birth
control. Them when I went there today,
the doctor said that I didnt need a pap.
She said only women that have been
sexually active for over 3 years needed
it. I have only been sexually active for
less than a year. So I didnt get it. But
my question is, do I need to have a pap.
It just seemed kind of weird. 3 years is
a long time. What if you have something
like cervical cancer and you dont have a
pap because you havent been sexually
active for 3 years? You could be sick and
die in that amount of time.
So please help. Thx.

Bridgie, it is very unlikely that you will
be sick and die in that amount of time,
but what you said about the pap in 3 years
is a little weird. But I did find this
information out..
It is important for all women to have pap
tests, along with pelvic exams, as part of
their routine health care. You need a pap
test if you are:
21 years or older
under 21 years old and have been sexually
active for three years or more
there is no age limit for the pap test.
Even women who have gone through menopause
(when a woman's periods stop) need regular
pap tests.
I truly cannot understand why they say in
the first 3 years! I think that is
ridiculous! But I dunno.. When I am done
with medical school, i'mma change that!
Ha ha.. See ya

presumably, she is under 21??
If you are under 21 and not sexually
active the risk is negligable.
Sexual activity increases the risk which
is why those under 21 but that have been
sexually active for 3 or more years should
be tested.
