I have a broad range of problems, from
memory to every day activities, and I
believe I have more than im diagnosed
with.
Before we get into this, ill give you some
background im adopted, I was adopted at
birth, my biological mother was a habitual
user of some of the harsher drugs
including cocaine and possibly heroin.
I was diagnosed with adhd when I was
young(2 or 3)
however, along with the expected spats of
hyperactivity, and attention span lapses,
I have several symptoms that dont seem to
be linked by that
heres a few of the symptoms I tend to
im ambidextrous, I can write with either
hand, and I can write backwards sidewayes
and upside down as well as normally,
however no matter which hand I use, and no
matter how hard I try, it always ends up
hard to read, very messy, ive tried
everything I can, I simply cannot write
neatly.
I have exellent long term memory, I can
literally remember things from ages most
19 year olds have long forgotten,( I
remember a dog I had, when I was about 2
and a half vividly) however,i have
horrible short term memory, to the point
where even leaving myself reminders doesnt
help sometimes, I forget things that
happen minutes before on a regular
basis.
I was reading something about variants of
dyslexia and noticed that for some of the
variants I do tend to have some of the
symptoms, and some on a less severe scale
than listed
the ones I have full blown are
"discalculia"http://en.Wikipedia.Org/wiki/
dyscalculia
# reliance on 'counting-on' strategies,
e.G. Using fingers, rather than any more
efficient mental arithmetic strategies.
Im fine with numbers generally on the 2,
5 and 10 scales but I cannot even do basic
math in other scales without some sort of
reference
# inability to comprehend financial
planning or budgeting, sometimes even at a
basic level, for example, estimating the
cost of the items in a shopping basket.
I cannont calculate most money values in
my head, I try and usually come up way
wrong.
# difficulty with times-tables, mental
arithmetic, etc.
I can do the 2 5 and 10 tables without
problems, but the higher it goes the more
trouble I have until it hits an even table
again (40,50,60)
# does better in subjects such as science
and geometry, which require logic rather
than formulas, until a higher level
requiring calculations is needed.
Science was my best subject, and still is.
# difficulty with conceptualizing time and
judging the passing of time.
I usualy come up way wrong in these
situations.
Now onto the problems that only partially
give me problems
# problems differentiating between left
and right.
Once in a while ill mix my left and right
up.
Having a poor sense of direction (i.E.
North, south, east, and west) and may also
have trouble still even with a compass.
I mix east and west up on a fairly common
basis
now onto the next thing I had stuff from
"dyspraxia"http://en.Wikipedia.Org/wiki/dy
spraxia
speed and language:
# difficulty sequencing sounds
* within a word
i frequently add the wrong sounds into
words, for example meaning to say "show"
but pronouncing it "shaw" or "shou"
* forming words into sentences
i frequently use the wrong word, despite
the correct word being in my head.
Fine motor control :
* learning basic movement patterns.
* developing a desired writing
speed.
* establishing the correct pencil
grip
* hand aching while writing
ive had trouble with all of these
symptoms.
Upon reading this page again I noticed a
couple flags for me
"cross-laterality, ambidextrousness, and a
shift in the preferred hand are also
common in people with dyspraxia"
i mentioned earlier that I am in fact
ambidextrous.
Things that I simply cant find an answer
for :
~ occasionally ill "black out" for a split
second, in which time I lose all senses
only to "jolt" back to conciousness less
than half a second or so later. This has
happened when ive been at rest for a while
as well as while I had been at work. This
has only happened within the last year or
2.
~ occasionally but not as often as above,
ill become extremely light headed, my
vision clouds to the point where I cannot
see anything at all, my other senses dull
rather than completely crap out, I can
hear, but not comprehend what im hearing
while its happening, I can feel and have
basic awareness of my orientation but lose
my orientation rather quickly,but usually
tend to completely lose my balance ive
actually fallen face first onto a cinder
block, bloodying my nose and didnt realize
it until the episode ended, another time I
fell down the stairs only to come out of
the episode extremely disoriented, I
remembered tumbling, but did not remember
the fall itself, these incedencts have
caused me to instinctively sit down on the
spot as soon as I realize its happening,
as sometimes it comes slowly, only to
reside anywhere between a couple seconds
to a couple minutes , but ive also had it
simply hit me out of nowhere, which is
usually when I fall. Ive had tests done
to try an figure out what causes this,
when I was younger I had an mri done, but
they found nothing out of the ordinary, a
couple years later I had a test where I
drank a bottle of orange glucose orange
soda tasting stuff and they did several
blood tests over the next 6 hours but
didnt find anything wrong.
My other issues arent as bad as this one
in my eyes, as im scared to death it will
happen at a bad time or in a bad place ( I
live in arvada colorado, right next to the
main road, as well as a highway offramp,
so theres a lot of traffic) and I have to
cross extremely busy roads to get just
about anywhere, im terrified ill have one
of these attacks in the middle of one of
them.
No doctor ive asked can seem to figure out
what causes this, so im hoping, that by
turning to the internet ill find someone
who at least has the same problem, and if
im lucky someone that knows what it is.
