Drinking Before Finding Out Posted: 11-13-06 11:44am
It's during that window of time when you
can't take an accurate pregnancy; before
you actually miss your [next] period.
Basically, it's before you can know for
sure if you are or not.
I had unprotected sex about a month ago w/
my boyfriend. Since I didn't think much
of getting pregnant, b/c we have been
having unprotected sex for months now
& b/c I never conceived, I kept on
living the high life of a 20-yr. Old.
For the last couple of weeks I have been
partying, which means drinking large
amounts of alcohol.
I took chaser pills once to help w/ my
hang-overs, and lots of aspirin the other
times to ease the headache. I'm young, so
I figure I have all the freedom in the
world to enjoy my youth. [don't label me
as wreckless b/c i'm very mature - i've
been living on my own since I was 19-yr's
old & I work between 40 & 50 hours
a week, plus college]. Despite my stupid
mistakes, i'm a good person w/ a level
head on my shoulders.
I'm nervous, however, b/c for the past
couple of weeks [when sober] I have been
feeling sick. I thought that perhaps it
was due to all the drinking, but I only go
out on saturdays. My feeling of nausea
comes & goes, and when it subsides I
become extremely hungry, but perhaps that
is b/c I can finally eat w/out feeling
like it won't stay down? I didn't think
pregnancy at all, b/c I have been pregnant
once before [but opted to abort due to my
young age & a medication I was using;
severe birth defect warnings], and I know
that when I was pregnant then I just felt
it; like I knew before taking an tests. I
don't have that feeling this time around.
My period is 3 days late, which isn't
normal. I'm giving it a couple of more
days & if it still hasn't arrived,
i'll take a test.
If I am, will I stand a chance of giving
birth to a healthy baby even though i've
gone out drinking? It was during the time
when you couldn't tell, so how was I
supposed to know not to do this or that?
Of course, if I am [pregnant], i'll stop
everything harmful while I carry out the
rest of my pregnancy. I don't smoke or do
drugs, but aspirin & chaser pills
aren't something a person should take
while pregnant. I'm probably over
reacting, but since my last pregnancy was
in jeopardy due to a medication I used
while not knowing, I was afraid to chance
the health of my baby. [i was told I was
more than likely going to have a child w/
severe problems]. I'm afraid to be told
those things again.
I had a friend who was careless before
finding out about her pregnancy, smoking
pot & drinking, etc. But as soon as
she found out, she stopped. Her son is
perfectly healthy. She told me, "it's
amazing how much your baby can shield
itself from in the very beginning." is
this true?
Please, any advice would help. I'm just
paranoid. I'll let everyone know what
happens w/ me. If I don't get my period
by wednesday, another 2 days away, i'll be
taking a h.P.T.

The first 3 months are the most crutial
for the development of your child which
means it can be damaged much easlier. I'm
not gonna lie f your preg there is a
chance your child will have problems when
s/he is born but there also is a chance
they will be normal.Your already 3 days
past the time you should have gotten your
period so you can take a test. Better to
know sooner than later cause you will need
to take prenatals and get doctors
appointments in order! Good luck.

Well, the period of time in a pregnancy
where the most damage can be done is
actually in the beginning because this is
when the different cells are
differentiating and developing. As far as
different teratogens go, alcohol can be
pretty damaging. However, studies have
shown that if a woman stops using alcohol
as soon as she realizes she is pregnant ,
there is a very high chance that there
will not be any complications. The
trouble with alcohol comes about when it
is used on a regular basis, to the point
where it is in the babies system and
affecting their cells as it would a normal
adult. Also, trouble arises when nerve
cells and brain cells are developing, but
it is still fairly early for you for that.
Honestly though, if you are only supposed
to be getting your period now, your still
so early into it that the cells most
likely havent started to differentiate at
all yet, so there is virtually no risk for
lasting damage as long as you stop
drinking and practice a healthy lifestyle.

When I had a feeling I could be pregnant 3
days before my period was due I took a
early response test and it ame out
nagative. I was going to a party anyway
that night and I did drink alot then my
period didn't come and I took another test
and found out I was pregnant. I spoke to
my midwife and she said not to worry about
that time just don't drink during pregnany
and if you do limit it to a glass of wine
with dinner
