I got into a discussion with my sons
pediatrician today about generic
medicatoins. She said that generics are
just as good as brand name, except
hormonal meds like birth control. She
said generic bc is not as reliable.
She scared the crap out of me because im
on generic nordette. Im just curious
about your guys' opinions on this.
Thanks.

I don't see why it wouldn't be just as
good as any other generic medication.
They are probably made by the same drug
companies. I wouldn't worry about it.

I 100% disagree on this one.
Here in the uk docotrs are not allowed to
prescribe by brand name - they have to
prescribe by the drug name.
For example when I was presribed anti
depressants my gp was not allowed to
presribe "prozac" but had to put
fluoxetine - which is the drug name
marketed as prozac.
The drug name and dosage you are getting
is the important factor.
For example with my recent screwed up
hormones I was prescribed norethisterone
5mg 3xday.
Norethisterone is often marketed as
micronor.
So long as the actual drug and doseage are
the same - you get the same level of
protection.

they are all as good as brand named ones
because they have the same ingredients and
same amounts. Does she mean thats not
true for birth control then? Surely it
would be illegal to sell something with
the wrong amount or wrong drugs in
it..Thats the only way it wouldnt be as
reliable. I dont get it..

i have been on generic nordette for about
4 years, more or less, and have never ever
had a problem, nor did i get pregnant.
find a new doctor if she is telling you
that! generic just means that possibly the
way the pill is packaged, meaning the
capsule, the coating on the outside is
different, which allows companies to not
infringing on copyright or patent laws,
but can sell the same mix of chemical in
pill form for half the price!
