Breastfeeding Attempts....

Well, I really wanted to breastfeed but
brianne is having a hard time latching
on.... When I go to feed her, she'll
either grab ahold and immediately let go,
or she'll put her hands up to her face and
move her head back and forth to reject me,
and she sometimes falls asleep while i'm
attepting to get her latched. When she
does get latched, she only sucks for about
3 or 4 seconds and then lets go... Her
last bowel movement was this morning but
that was after the pediatrician ordered
her to have isomil supplement b/c she was
a bit jaundiced and hadn't moved her
bowels for more than 24 hours before that.
This morning she had orange pee.....
Someone told me that means she is
dehydrated.... I don't know what to
do.... I gave her some isomil b/c I am
nervous she isn't getting the right
nutrition.... Any of you have
breastfeeding advice for a struggling mom
with a 3 day old infant? How can I get
her to latch and eat enough? My milk
hasn't come in yet... I'm so upset... I
feel like a failure... I want to
breastfeed.... Please help me out...

Aw sorry your finding this hard. I dunno
what to suggest if your milk hasnt come in
yet...Does that mean your still producing
colostrum? I dunno how long its supposed
to take, I think it was 2 days with me.
Lucas had problems latching on properly
for the first 2 days because he was very
sleepy due to the 2 shots of pethidine I
had during labor.
Try squeezing some out with your hand then
put her mouth there so she can taste thats
where her food is. And if she falls to
sleep straight away try blowing on her
face gently. Might sound a bit cruel but
my midwife advised me to do that to try
make lucas wake up and suck more. It
didnt really work cos it woke him up but
he'd only fall straight back to sleep.
It was cos of the pethidine with us tho.
Sorry I dont know what else...
Hope it gets better.
I would ask the doctor if this goes on
much longer.

There should be a breastfeeding consultant
at your hospital who will be able to show
you a couple of different ways to hold
baby to get the best latch type for you
guys.
Keep persevering - don't give up.
Try squeezing a drop of milk out and rub
it on your nipple before offering it to
her.

on
positions and
holds

I know the feeling, i've been trying to
breastfeed all week with no success.. My
baby latches on fine but then doesn't suck
more than a few times before she gets
frustrated and starts crying. It's hard
not being able to do it, I wanted to
breastfeed her so badly. I express my
milk, and before it came in I expressed
the colostrum so she got the nutrients
from that. Keep trying, she might get the
hang of it when your milk comes in.. I
know it's difficult for you, but you're
not a failure hun.. I felt the same way a
couple of days ago. It gets easier.. It
just takes a few days to get everything
sorted. Good luck x x x x

Zanny don't give up, babies need to learn
how to breastfeed too.
Ask your hospital to put you in touch with
a breastfeeding consultant.

a breastfeeding
consultant. |
there should have been one who came round
to see her before she left hospital.
Dunno if you guys are already doing it
like this or not but this is how it worked
best for me.
Whichever boob side you're breastfeeding
with, use the same side arm to hold her
under the head/neck with the rest of your
arm along her back so shes on her side
towards u layed on your belly or a
cushion.
Then use your free hand to hold your boob
right in deep underneath so its not even
touching your nipple.
And bring your thumb and index finger
forward a bit to squeeze the whole nipple
area into her m
outh.
The other position worked best for me is
laying the babies head on a cushion
directly under your boob, with her body on
your side...So backwards compared to the
first position, and your same side arm
supporting her body. Do the same thing
as ^above to get her to latch on.
Sorry if that was confusing
Just try to make sure her head is really
well supported up enough so she can stay
latched on firmly.
Edited to add-
also try putting your nipple just under
her nose so she can smell the milk, then
bring it down slowly over her top lip so
she opens her mouth, then guide it right
into her mouth. It surprised me at first
how much nipple/boob they need in there to
be able to latch on and suck properly.
Should I be saying breast instead of boob
here? Lmao

she is severly jaundiced.
Orange crystals in the urine indicate that
the .Bilirubens are trying to force
themselves out. As soon as I saw them in
.Nana's diaper, I called. It was
literally like my baby was having a
period, but it was orange.
The only way .Bilirubens can leave the
body is through the poop. Make sure she
is having more than 1 bowel movement per
day. This is critical in .Jaundice.
My baby had the same problem. I was
ordered to give her formula because my
breastmilk made it worse.
Because of that, my milk never came
down.
Call her doctor and tell them about the
crystals in her urine!!!!!! immedietly jaundice is
*nothing* to mess around with. Nana's
levels peaked at 21....Which is close to
brain damaging levels.
I hope this helps you a little. I know
how it feels to be worried about .Jaundice
that can literally have an affect on your
baby for the rest of her life, if left
untreated.
Other than that, your daughter is
*beautiful*!!!!

Well, my ped wouldn't talk to me b/c she
hasn't seen her yet so I called the
maternity uit at the hospital and they
said it's b/c she needs more liquid!
Should I just take her to the emergency
room? I called my lactation consultant
and she wants to see me at 3:00 today. I
told her about it and she seems to think
it's normal; however, everything i've
googles about it says it has to do with
jaundice like you said! I don't know what
to do... I love her more than anything
and I don't want anything bad to happen.
Being a mommy is so hard.... I love her
so much

Like I said, i've been there and .Jaundice
is nothing to be lax about!

I agree with .Sarah! If your ped won't
talk to you, go to the e.R! I wouldn't
want to risk it! &.If your mommy
instinct is telling you something isn't
right, go go go!

How old is your baby? I know it's normal
to have some discolouration in the baby's
nappy for the first few days or so after
birth because my midwife warned me about
it. Also, baby girls can have what looks
like a bit of a period but it's just your
hormones affecting her body.
However, I agree with the other ladies who
say it's worrying if your baby is not
feeding well because she could become
dehydrated very quickly. Definitely seek
medical attention. Don't fret if you
have to express and bottle feed or use
formula and water. Sometimes things just
don't work out the way we plan and even
though it hurts, your little one will be
fine.

My daughter is 4 days old today. I am
taking her to the hospital at 3:00. I am
going to meet with my lactation consultant
and she is having me bring one of the
orange diapers so she can look at it. She
said if things look iffy then she'll have
the pediatrician on staff look her over
and maybe even draw some blood. I was
supposed to go back and have her blood
checked again tomorrow anyways so.....
*sigh* I love being a mommy she makes my heart
melt<3

With a 4 day old(how old my daughter was)
with orange crystals in her urine pplus a
baba with .Jaundice, makes for excessively
high .Biliruben levels.
I was in the hospital the first 9 days of
my baby's life getting her blood tested.
It didn't get better until she was 2 weeks
old. It was starting to get dangerous and
we thought that medical intervention might
be necessary.
I wouldn't give you advice of something I
had never experienced. This is still
fresh in my brain and I remember vividly
the phone call when I mentioned the orange
"crystals" in my daughter's(who was
severly .Jaundiced) urine. It was an
urget rush to the doctors office.
It *will* get better, it just has to come
out through her poop!!
In 3 months, you'll be able to look back
at how craazy the 1st week of her life
was!!

Well I went to see the nurse and she said
that brianne seems ok. We tested her
weight and she had me feed then we weighed
her again and she seemed to be swollowing
enough of my milk. When I left the
hospital yesterday she weighed 6 pounds 13
ounces and today she weighed 7 pounds 1
ounce she had the house
ped look her over and he said her jaundice
is getting better and for the amount of
crystals in her urine, there is nothing to
worry about. He changed her diaper and
there weren't any crystals. He said that
if it was something severe she would have
it with every pee. *sigh* but I do have
to take her in the morning to get her
bilirubin levels checked so.... Pray for
her.

Having struggled with breasfeeding twice
myself, the only thing I can recommend is
frequency. (why does it alway seem to be
girls who refuse to be breastfed???)
this will help your milk to come in too.
Pop her on your breast as often as you
can- see if you can get her to suck while
she sleeps, that's a good trick.
Just spend, like, a while day swapping her
from side to side as often as she'll take
it.
The more she takes, the quicker her
jaundice will improve, and also, the
quicker your milk will come in.
Thinking of you both.

My sister-in-law had that problem with her
last son. He was jaundiced too and would
fall asleep or just quit feeding.
Jaundice makes the baby really tired. You
may want to consult your pediatrician
about the behavior. They had to put my
nephew under one of the bili lights and he
did so much better after his bili levels
went back to normal.
