Bright Red Bleeding At 6 Wks, Still Has Heartbeat Posted: 11-28-06 02:25am
I'm 41yo, this is my 2nd preg (first 4 mo
ago was a blighted ovum). At 5 wks, I had
dark brown spotting for 1 wk. My ob did
an ultrasound & everything looked okay
(sac in place!). At 6 wks I had a gush of
bright red blood x 3 in 1 day &
thought for sure it was a miscarriage. No
clots or tissue. The next day the ob
could see a heartbeat and everything still
looked good. She did not have an
explanation for the bleeding. Had this
happened to anyone else? Any ideas why
the bleeding if not a miscarriage?
Thanks for your help.

No, i'm sorry I have no idea. If your
doctor can't give you some sort of
explanation perhaps you should ask
another...

This happened to me with my second
pregnancy. I thought for sure I was
having a miscarriage too, but at 6 weeks I
had an ultrasound which confirmed a
heartbeat and all looked fine. The
doctor explained the bleeding as being a
clot of blood that sometimes forms during
implantation. Because it was situated
right beside the amniotic sac she did say
there was a chance that the baby could be
expelled if the bleeding continued.
Luckily for me, my body just reabsorbed
the clot and I now have a healthy son!

I'm so glad to hear you had a healthy son!
Did the bleeding continue throughout the
pregnancy?

Yes, I have a healthy, extremely active,
perfect 4 year old! To answer your
question, I only bled for about 3 weeks at
the most... Not consistently either. It
was scary because sometimes it would be
bright red and fairly heavy, plus I
experienced some intense cramping with
this. Eventually, after a few weeks it
turned to brown spotting and finally
stopped completely. The rest of the
pregnancy proceded normally without
complication! Hopefully your outcome
will be similar. Just remember that a
heartbeat is an excellent sign and that
many women spot early on. Keep in touch.
