Tongue Bite
Posted: 02-02-04 04:06am

Hi. I recently had a seizure (i almost never have them unless I drink too much alcohol and dont sleep) & I bit my tongue rather severely. Any advice on how I can stop this happening in future,- what should my wife do? Now it has happened, what advice do you have on how to help my tongue to heal, it is rather painful? I would be very grateful for any help I can get.

One if you know theres a possiblitiy of having a seizure you shouldn't be drinking, specially if your on meds....Drinking lowers the effects of the pills. As for your tongue eat lots of popcycles and icecubes. And always make sure you get enough sleep.

Theres not much you can do ,i use to bite mine alot.It has looked like hamburg meat I couldnt eat or drink unless it was through a straw. What happens when you have a seizure all your muscles lock up and if your tongue is near teeth then it locks down on it.Dont drink if you are taking meds. They dont mix.

I also know the incredible pain and suffering from a severe tongue bite. I am currently dealing with my own injury. Like thomas I have suffered seizures from drinking too much (or little) and payed the price for my weakness. Although my seizures only happen at night after I have gone to bed and are pretty infrequent. This is the first one I have had in over two years. I have been on medication for over 20 years. I was on a sales trip last weak and had a seizure in my hotel room that night after I had gone to bed. I woke up about two hours later with that incredibly worn out feeling as if all of my muscles had been shocked. My tongue was chewed up from the seizure with gashes on both sides and the front. It is so depressing. I had to get up the next morning and work our booth at the trade show all that day and the next. I bought some tylenol and a oral pain relieving gel to try to help with the pain. There is nothing quite like the pain and humiliation of a tongue bite. It hurts to talk, to eat or sit still. God bless all who suffer!

I only have seizures in my sleep as well, and I had one last night, and while biting my tongue to look something out of a bad 80s horror movie really sucks, i'm grateful when I only do it on one side, unfortunately, I bit it on both sides lastnight. I just try to look at the bright side of the situation; use it as an excuse to eat more ice cream! I find it also allows me to actually listen to people more intently, and sometimes I manage to connect with some of them more closely than normal... Of course, it still hurts, and I can't kiss my boyfriend or eat anything too spicy, salty, or sour, so I find advil is a good helper. I find oragel tastes revolting and it wears off too soon too, but give it a shot; it might work for you
