Oral Contraceptives And Antibiotics (macrobid) Posted: 12-03-06 22:35pm
Hello,
with all the misleading information out
there, I figured I would look elsewhere
for some insight. I have been on ocps
for the past two years. I was prescribed
the antibiotic macrobid for a uti and
started taking it during the first week of
my pills for five days and stopped taking
it at the beginning of the second week of
pills. The medication was not labeled as
a kind that altered the effectiveness of
ocps and my doctor did not mention it
either. However, I did use a back-up
method while taking the antibiotics and
for two weeks afterward. Yet, when I
started my withdrawal bleeding or "period"
during my fourth week of placebo pills, I
did not use a back-up method.
My question is: would it have been
possible to ovulate during that week of
placebo pills because of the prior use of
antibiotics?
I'm a nervous wreck and would really like
some advice!
Thank you.

No, you would have been protected during
the placebo week. You also did the
correct thing in using back-up like you
did, so your protection would not have
been compromised.

Has anyone else heard of anything else
about the antibiotic macrobid and birth
control pills?
Thanks!

I will add this..
Some doctors believe that certain
antibiotics do not interact with birth
control, while others believe 'better safe
than sorry'.

Adviceseeker, during you periods the
chances to become pregnant are very-very
low, even without any contraception.
