Okay, most of you have probably never heard of this instrument.

Last year my husband and I went to a renaissance festival, and there was a man there playing an instrument that is just breathtaking. It's like a piano, but the strings are attached to huge bells instead, kind of like church bells I guess. The man was dressed kind of like the .Phantom of the .Opera dude and had to wear ear protection (that thing was loud!, and I forget what the instrument's name was!

Can anyone help me out? Do you know what the instrument might be?

Never mind, I found it! Mr.
Green

it's called the carillon! The guy used it to play a really pretty version of "carol of the bells", and all this talk about the holidays made me think of it.

It sounds like it could be an early version of the celesta. You'd think that I could think of this having a music degree! I'll keep digging around in my brain and think of anything else that I can come up with for ya! Smile

Just out of curiosity, is a music degree something needed to be a doctor? Or are you going for more than one, or did you change your mind about music, and are now wanting to go down another path?

i actually decided during my fourth year that it really wasn't what I wanted to do professionally. I love music, and I love making music. But on my own terms. It's better kept a personal thing for me. So basically, i'm making a total transformation right now! It's absolutely terrifying!! But very exciting. Smile

actually, most people graduate with a four year degree around 22 or 23, and most (not all, of course) start with med school immediately after, so it's kinda normal. The sooner you start, the sooner you get done, which is good because it takes fooooreeeever...

not in the uk. College is two years and then you go to uni to do your degree - usually 3 or 4 years.

Some people take time off in between, I took a few semesters off, 1, because a friend of mine was having a nervous breakdown and she needed some help raising her child and 1 semester due to marriage problems, 1 to have a baby, another one to help with a child, some people just do not go straight through college, things happen, look at those that start college that end up having to go to war. I am not trying to back anyone up here I have just seen situations in my life where things happen. I am not slamming anyone or trying to cause drama. My .Sister was 50y/o when she got her 4 year degree.

oh yea! People definitely need time off! I'm not in school right at the moment myself. It's nice to have a little break before I dive head-first into a program that's going to take me the next 8 years to complete! I know plenty of people who have been overwhelmed from it all because it's so demanding! My mother finally graduated when she was forty because she waited so long. That's one reason why she's encouraging me to keep going so I don't wait as long as she did. But yes, breaks are very much needed! It's not offense to me at all that you would say so, either. I completely agree. Smile
