Low progesterone can cause miscarriage. It
is a rare condition, but is possible. In
the first 3 months of pregnancy
progesterone is produced by the yellow
body (the corpus luteum gravidarium).
Later, the placenta becomes in charge of
producing progesterone. Progesterone is
important for preparing the endometrium to
accept the fertilized egg-cell and feed
the embryo until the placenta has
developed. By stimulating the endometrial
development, progesterone helps in
developing the placenta. Progesterone also
calms the uterine muscle contractions and
prepares the breasts for breastfeeding.
Failure of the yellow body to produce
enough progesterone can be treated with
progesterone supplements. You can see you
gynecologist for more information and
treatment options.
