Q: Breastfeeding
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 7th, 2006
I stopped breastfeeding about a week ago. I now am regreting it and I am still able to express milk by hand, though my breasts aren't filling up like before. My baby is 3 weeks old and I want to know if I start breastfeeding again if it would possible to get my milk supply back.

It will cost you nothing to try breastfeeding again. Producing milk via the breast’s gland is a neuro-hormonal reflex that is conditioned and stimulated by the baby’s sucking. Sensations from the breast’s papilla are transmitted to the brain that stimulates the secretion of certain hormones from the pituitary gland (prolactin and oxytocin) necessary for milk secretion from the breasts. It won’t be easy to establish that lost reflex again, but it is worth a try.
