I remember someone talking about this not
too long ago. While this seems a bit
crazy to me, I was getting slightly goofy
here and there the past few days, and I
noticed that apparently it seemed to be
linked to the fact that I started using
this new toothpaste that contains stevia.
Well, though i'm still doubtful and
think it may simply be a case of a bad run
of days since this happens now and then to
everyone, I think i'm going to steer away
from it and I suggest to anyone who is
thinking of using stevia and has a severe
case like me, do the same. Here's
why:
1. Stevia, first and foremost, has a
blood sugar lowering effect. Great for
diabetics, but potentially dangerous for
some of us (maybe not all).
2. The reason it has this effect is
two-fold. First, it actually blocks
the body's absorbtion of all types of
sugar. The reason I believe the
toothpaste may be key here is that sugar
absorbtion actually begins in your
mouth and thus this shiat may have
been effecting this in the most important
area sugar absorbtion occurs. Plus, this
is the first area where anything is
absorbed into your body, like caffeine,
whatever is in chew and so forth.
Therefore, it's likely the crap was
entering my blood stream in the mouth.
However, it also has this same effect on
the entire digestive tract, meaning that
any sugar you eat, whether it be from an
apple or a green bean, will not enter your
blood and in more severe cases, where this
little bit can count, can be dangerous.
3. The other reason is that stevia
significantly slows down carbohydrate
absorbtion. Since the basis of my, and
many diets, is low-carbohydrate, this can
also be dangerous because the majority of
sugar is coming from plants that don't
have a high glycemic index. Thus,
blocking the absorbtion of what
carbohydrates they do contain, can also be
dangerous.
Thus, I strongly recommend that people
with more severe cases avoid stevia in any
form because it appears to be a pretty
nasty little herb for some people. I
know there was someone on here who was
using it to flavor food, which I would
assume would be an even worse reaction.
I'm going to play with it a bit to see if
this is really what did it for me, which
is possible, though a bit extreme, and if
it does I fear to find out what it could
do if I were to ingest the stuff.
Stick to xylitol if you're worried and
want sweetness in some food.
