Abnormal Paps: negative biopsy, positive ECC
Posted: 12-10-06 14:40pm

I've had a series of abnormal pap smears over the past 18 months or so. Ascus 1st, then 6 months later my pap showed lsil, followed by a negative ecc. My most recent pap smear was again lsil. Shortly after that I has a biopsy and ecc. The biopsy that followed was negative but the ecc results were lsil. What might it mean for the biopsy to be negative but the ecc come back with low grade changes?

A negative result from a biopsy and a positive result (L-SIL) from an ENDOCERVICAL curettage means that the process is located in the ENDOcervix, not in the EXOcervix from where the biopsy was taken. You HAVE TO continue doing regular Pap-tests and colposcopies. A test for the human papiloma virus (HPV) is also necessary. If you continue with such results, a cone-biopsy will be needed. You can consult your gynecologist for further details and follow up.
