Question For the English
Posted: 12-11-06 15:41pm

Is prostitution legal in england? I'm reading this article on yahoo about homicide.E.D prostitutes and it keeps calling them "sex workers". The phrase kind of makes me wonder if it's legal there. It's illegal here (except in nevada).

Illegal as far as I know but they get protection from the police to an extent. I keep on seeing that story on the news, 3 dead and one missing it's so sad they think they're looking for a serial killer

Prostitution is definitely not legal here. I think 'sex workers' is probably just a politically correct term? Confused

I thought it was legal in certain areas where you aren't annoying neighbours etc. Which they call a red light zone.

I just looked it up online, it says there are red light zones in the uk which are prostitution tolerance zones.

Its legal to prostitute if you are over 18yrs old and to live on the money you earn from it.

However its illegal to pimp or run a brothel.

So it seems as long as you're 18+, working on the streets not in a brothel or with a pimp, and only do it in the allocated red light zones its legal and you dont get arrested.

The news thing about the serial killer theory said they are looking for a 5th sex worker now Shocked

'police flooded the red light area of ipswich with officers overnight in a bid to catch a feared serial killer after three prostitutes were found dead and two more reported missing.'

They were just talking about it on 'the wright stuff' and they said its not legal...Huh im confused now lol maybe they meant its not legal on the whole but its 'tolerated' in the red light districts so u dont get arrested...Oh I dunno.

Prostitution is legal in germany although I think its called something different, look up red light district online in major cities they have like prostitute neighborhoods where barely dressed and naked women dance in windows u can walk down the streets and watch through the window or pay for sexual favors etc even stay the night with em if u pay for these favors, some areas are highly dangerous with drugs etc but some actually have cops that walk aroudn to keep order , crazy european things I tell ya , im not a fan of the red light district at all

Just thought i'd update..Cos they found the other 2 missing women, they think.

'police hunting a possible serial killer targeting prostitutes said they had found two more bodies on tuesday and that they believed five sex workers had now been found dead in the last ten days.'

nothing's been released to the press but I imagine they are taking any dna they can find. They haven't even mentioned how exactly these women were killed, have they?

Doesnt look like it since no arrests have been made so far. They have to do post mortems to determine whether for sure they are all linked, so far they said there are 'striking similarities' so it looks like it. All in the same area.

'the most notorious such killer was the 19th century mur.Derer known as "jack the ripper", who was blamed for the deaths of five prostitutes in east london in 1888 but was never found.

The most prolific was peter sutcliffe, called the "yorkshire ripper", who mur.Dered 13 women, mainly prostitutes, in northern england from 1975 to 1980 before he was caught.'

its all so sick.

It goes on to say about how with the 'yorkshire ripper' the mur.Ders happened over a period of years. This now is 5 women in 10 days.

Wait green, they said one of the girls was suffocated/strangled, here's the quote

"the three victims who have been named were identified as gemma adams, 25, whose body was found dec. 2; tania nicol, 19, whose body was found friday; and 24-year-old anneli alderton, whose body was found sunday. Police said alderton — who was last seen on a train — was asphyxiated. It appeared she had been strangled and that she was not sexually assaulted, police said.

The condition of the bodies of adams and nicol — both of whom were found in water — has prevented investigators from determining a cause of death or whether they were sexually assaulted."
