According to your description, it seems
likely that insomnia is acting as a
symptom of a primary neurotic disorder,
probably an anxious-depressive disorder.
The new generation of antidepressants
(SSRIs) are recommended for treating
depressive disorders. Anxiolitic drugs
(benzodiazepines) can be used for
short-term treatment of the anxious
episodes. Concretely for the insomnia,
doctors tend to prescribe zolpidem.
Psychotherapy is also very important for
treating neurotic disorders. To follow up,
you can ask for help from mental health
professional to seek counsel.
