Breastfeeding Question... Melina Update
Posted: 12-14-06 21:37pm

I have been thinking about the problems I have been having with breastfeeding and something came to mind.
Today when I went to the dr with melina she was telling me how sometimes when women adopt kids and want to breastfeed they can take hormones and start to produce milk...

Now that im thinking im putting together that I have always had high testosterone levels and im wondering could this contribute to lack of milk? Im wondering if I should make an appointment and see if maybe I need to take a prescription to produce more milk.. Does anyone have any kind of idea?

Oh and also.. So melina went to the drs today she is 2 weeks and a day old. She has gained a pound since she was there last shes almost 7 lbs now, she has grown an inch and a half she is now 19 and a half inches long, and her head is now 34 and a hald cm around, a half a cm more then when she was born! I can not believe it!!!!!

Just curious how you found out you werent making enough milk?

I would definately say to see a lactation consultant.

Many many many women take fenugreek to improve milk production.

Here is a link to the .L.L.L forums. They are breastfeeding pros. The lll leaders have gotten many women to relactate after orginally giving up on breastfeeding.

If she's gaining weight, doesn't that mean you're making enough milk?

Alyvia gained 10 ounces in two and a half weeks, and her doctor was thrilled to see that in a breastfeeding baby. A pound sounds awesome to me.

okay who told you you "had" to start supplementing?

God this makes me so mad!!

What is up with all of these doctors telling people they "have" to supplement??

Formula is just a bunch of artificial crap and synthetic chemicals, breastfeeding is so much better!!!! It is the perfect proportion of vitamins and minerals.

And they told you that you can only breastfeed for 46 hours? Meaning after 2 days she has to be on formula? What a crock of caca!!!! Evil or
Very Mad

i would tell them to shove their formula up their @sses.

Well, it certainly sound like she's thriving- however you're feeding her!!

If you want to feed her yourself, but you think your milk supply is not enough. You can take fenugeek, or fenurgreek or whatevr it's called- I did and it worked for me. You do perspire a bit and you will smell like maple syrup!!! Definately increases the milk supply.

Either way, breasmilk works on a supply demand basis- the more you feed, the more milk you will make.
The more you suppliment feeds, and skip feeding yourself, the more your body thinks- oh, we don't need milk?
So, if you want to get lovely melinda back on the breast exclusively, you will probably need to spend a ouple of days just almost constantly feeding her.
You will need to ignore everything else that's going on, becuase to have plenty of milk you need to rest lots, and eat lots.
So if you are going to do a boob marathon Laughing you need to spend all the time that sweet melinda is not feeding resting or eating. Go with her rythym, feed sleep play around for a bit sleep feed etc. (both of you)
if she's hungry she'll suck, if she's sucking, your body will get the message.
Drink plenty of water, and rest when she rests.

If you want to feed her, then don't let anyone tell you not to try- she's .Y.O.U.R.S !!!
Go mommy, go mommy, go mommy!!!!

Breastfeeding is a supply/demand thing. The more you suppliment, the less you'll be putting her to the breast. And the less milk your body will make. Literally every feeding that passes without putting her to the breast, diminishes your milk supply.

Nurse her exclusively as much as you can, and when your breasts are empty, if she still acts hungry give her a bit of formula as a top-off. But always breastfeed her first and make sure you completely empty one breast at each feeding, give her the second if she's still hungry, and formula on top of that if needed. But do not skip nursing sessions! This will destroy your milk supply!

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh you drive me freaking nuts natalia! You know miss fuc*ing know it all. Lll does not help all the time, some people just do not produce enough milk. I had laleche come to my house numerous times and after a c-sec it takes longer for milk to come in. I never had my (i'm not sure what the word is in english) "montee de lait" when the milk comes in and I did breastfeed as much as I could (every freaking 20 minutes cause he was constantly hungry but after losing over a pound 2 diff docs, mine and his ped. Told me to supplement and keep pumping and feeding. I would pump for a medical answer hour and get maybe 5 ml. It was horrible and made me feel like sh*t. I am sick to death of your freaking attitude. You think you know everything??? Go start yourt own site!

Claudia, sorry... Do what you think is best for you. Call your health centre, talk to someone about what is going on and do yor best. Formula is not the worst thing in the world it's not like you're giving melina 2% milk or something. Trey was exclusively formula fed from 6 weeks and and he is a healthy, smart, fun, wonderfull child and that has to do with me, not what I fed him. Do any of you remember if you were breastfed or not??? I don't.

I agree with .Jess.

I wanted to breastfeed, but guess what? I couldn't. I called .Le.Leche .League as well. But if your milk doesn't come in, it doesn't come in.

I know, nat, that you're upset that you couldn't breastfeed .Trace, but don't make it out to seem that supplementing is a horrible thing.

Sometimes it's a life/death decision for a baba. And thinking that supplementing is horrible is naive.

Nobody tore into your ass when you couldn't breastfeed .Trace, so don't make .Claudia feel like a bad mom for doing what .Melina's **doctor** told her to do.

can you people read???

I said nothing bad about claudia, and she didnt thinkj so either.

What im pissed about is the fu9king medical industry that tells everyone they need to supplement!!

So many people that were capable of breastfeeding lost their chance because of the effing greedy pharmeceutical companies that are just out to make a buck.

You people need to learn reading comprehension.

no you should really stop jumping down people's throats with your anti-formula kick. Most people find it irritating and offensive.

Oh my medical answer god.
I am not anti formula. I use formula, hello!!
What is so hard to understand about this?

As you can see by claudias above post, she even says she wishes she wouldnt have listened to them.

I know too many people that ended up on formula because they were told they "had" to supplement and as a result lost their breastmilk.

Im sorry that you feel formula is better than breastmilk.

I think its pathetic that so many people dont even try breastfeeding because their doctors tell them formula is better.

Now who doesn't know what they're talking about? Did I say I thought it was better? Ummm, no.

Look, I understand where you're coming from. I wish I would have been able to breastfeed as well but i'm not. I'm not physically able. Period. Everyone can't do it and the way your posts are worded make people feel bad about their inability to breastfeed and paranoid about the formula that they have to give their children. There's a way to say things and the way that you're doing it isn't it. It's tactless.

I understood what you are saying when I left the hospital they were like take formula just incase and same thing at the pedi for her.. They get a lot of money to pass out formula, I was talking about this a few days ago on krissy's 'breastfeeding nazis' post.

ok, you wanna talk about reading comprehension?

How do you say this in one sentence, and in another "i'm formula feeding my child, hello?!!"

what exactly happened with you that you didn't breastfeed?

I'm bitter too about not being able to breastfeed, but i'm certainly not going to come on here and tell someone to ignore her *child's doctors* instructions. That's insane...

I know you do a lot of research, but do not try to influence someone to do something that goes against Dr.S orders. Period.

Claudia, keep doing what you're doing. But don't stop pumping. My problem was I was at the Dr.S office everyday for 2 weeks after .Oni was born. I didn't have the time to pump, and therefore my milk never came in.

Reguardless of if you're attempts fail, your child will not become deformed or ill from being on formula. No matter how "synthetic" it is...

If my posts are so accusational, then why did claudia understand what I was trying to say? In fact she seemed to agree with me that she wish she hadnt listened to all the anti breastfeeding people.

I am not talking down to people who couldnt breastfeed. I am appalled with doctors who s only interest is to make money from pharm. Companies and push "supplementing" as the only way to go.

Im sorry if you took offense to that.
