I was on amoxicillan right after I got my
wisdom teeth removed. I took it for 5
days and then stopped the day before
christmas. I had a follow-up appointment
today and asked the doctor about the
effects on my birth control, and he said
to wait a full cycle. However, my period
is next week, so this cycle is about to be
over. When should I not worry about
having to use a back-up method??
Unfortunately this oral surgeon did not
seem to know what he was talking about

Typically, with most antibiotics, you
should use a back up method of protection
for at least 7 days after stopping the
antibiotics.
That said there are only a couple of
antibiotics that actually interact with
todays b/c pills, so the using a back up
method is more of a preventative measure
now.
It is still recommended though.
Usually it will tell you in your leaflet
in the box of b/c pills and the a/b
pills.
You could always double check and ring
your gyn or regular doc's office as well.
