Q: Thread worm infection and safe medication during pregnancy
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 28th, 2006
Just Wondering, this is quite embarrasing, but I am 6 weeks pregnant and think I may have caught thread worms from my cats, is there any way of treating this safely? Thanks, Jenny

If your cats is infected with thread worms (Enterobius vermicularis), it doesn’t necessarily mean that you also have worms. The first indicator that you are also infected with thread worms is to find worms in your stool. If you have worms in your stool, you should consult your doctor about what type of worms are present.
The only anti-worm drug I could find in my research where pregnancy is not mentioned as a contraindication is called "pirantel-pamoat". All the other anti-helmintic drugs are contraindicated in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. You'll have to confirm this with your primary physician and can seek counsel from her/him as soon as possible.
