Q: If pregnant, does birth control harm the baby?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 28th, 2006
My girlfriend thinks she may be pregnant. She missed a few days of her birth control, OrthoTryCyclin, and now (3 weeks later) she is exhibiting symptoms of pregnancy (morning sickness, etc). She has been taking her birth control daily since, and she doubled up the day she realized she forgot. If she was pregnant, would her taking a month of birth control affect the baby and how?

It seems that birth control pills would not harm the baby if your girlfriend is pregnant. Usually birth control pills are the most efficient method for contraception if the pills are taken regularly. If your girlfriend missed any of the last 7 pills in the month, there is no danger for an unwanted pregnancy because these pills are actually made of sugar, and not of hormones. If however, your girlfriend missed any pills from the pack, she has decreased the pills’ efficiency significantly. Your girlfriend can first take a home pregnancy test to confirm or exclude pregnancy.
