Gallbladder rupture prognosis
Posted: 12-30-06 10:22am

My Grandpa's gallbladder ruptured last night. And im really scared. He has diabetes and prostate cancer and really bad heart problems. Im just wanting to know his chances! I live 4 hrs away and so i need to know if i need to get up there. Hes having some kind of surgery done this morning. What are the chances that hell come out of the surgery? and What does it mean when the gallbladder ruptures?

Rupture of the gallbladder is fatal condition without surgical intervention. The gallbladder usually ruptures due to severe infection of its wall or because of tumor. After the rupture, all the contents of the gallbladder (bile and bacteria) spill into the peritoneal cavity causing acute diffuse inflammation (peritonitis). Acute diffuse peritonitis is a serious condition because an infection can be easily spread to the whole body, causing sepsis and septic shock. Surgical intervention saves a patient’s life if it is done on time. A prognosis also depends upon the presence of additional or previous diseases.
