Can ovarian cysts damage a fetus? Posted: 01-02-07 00:51am
I have cysts on both of my ovries and i
was just wondering if this would cause an
unborn child to be born with any special
needs? I was told that I would have a
greater chance of having a special needs
child because of the cysts on my overies.
my doctor isnt really saying much to me so
i wanted to get a seconed opinion.
Please help.

Ovarian cysts can’t cause any direct
damage to a fetus. Ovarian cysts can
affect a pregnancy only if they become
complicated by infarction or rupture.
Rupture or infarction of a big ovarian
cyst causes an acute abdomen that can
provoke premature delivery. Delivery of a
special needs child can be due to fetal
malformations. Fetal malformation are
either inborn (genetically conditioned) or
acquired during the embryonic development.
Ovarian cysts can damage neither the
fetus’s genes nor its embryonic
development.
