This has nothing to do with me i'm just curious.

At 5 weeks, can you *hear* a baby's heartbeat at an ultrasound or do you *see* it?

Edit to add:

because I didn't even know you can hear it that early. I always thought the first time you just saw it on the screen..And it was this tiny little thing going black and white and black and white etc. I'm just asking because this girl is telling me she had an ultrasound at exactly 5 weeks and they got to hear the baby's heartbeat and it was really fast. I'm not trying to prove her wrong. I'm just confused Confused

I went for an early u/s at around 5 weeks and saw a heartbeat. Actually looked like a pulsating blob. Lol it's very hard to hear a heartbeat before 9 weeks or so.

I'm pretty sure you can only see it that early on. I know the midwife said, when I was about 8 weeks gone, that she might not be able to hear the baby's heartbeat yet.

I never heard the heartbeat until my 16 week appointment, before that all I could do was see it on the untrasound

and a pulsating blob is really the best description of it ^_^

edit to add, its hard to even see the heartbeat at 5 weeks (not impossible just difficult) or at least thats what ive been told

I was lucky and heard finn's heartbeat at exactly 9 weeks. It was music to my ears!

I never had an early ultrasound but I always thought you could only *see* it in the beginning.

I had an early ultrasound with .Gabe at 6wks... Couldn't hear the heartbeat, but we could see it! I got to hear it via the doppler at exactly 10wks, though.

If a transvaginal ultrasound is performed, it can be possible to hear the heartbeat pretty early on. Not every ultrasound tech uses doppler to check the heartbeat, so I am sure that experiences vary depending on where the ultrasound is performed. If you can see the flickering heartbeat, that is what you are hoping for. Getting to hear it, is just a bonus!
