Help With Herpes Type 2! Posted: 01-09-07 06:24am
My wife and I both have the hsv type 1
during our teen age years. We both had
pretty active and unprotected sex life
before we got together. Now, we have
been together for 3 years as steady dates
and 6 years as a married couple. My wife
attest that she has been faithful all
these years. Save for one sexual
encounter with a prostitute about six
years ago, I never had any sexual partner
other than my wife.
Recently, my wife has blisters in and
around her vagina, her pubic area, near
her rectum and in her thigh. She has
discharge, although it does not have foul
odor and appears normal in color. She
experiences pain when urinating. She
experiences muscle pain all over her body.
She also experienced itching in her
genitals and had fever days before the
blisters. Save for the quality of her
discharge, all of these symptoms say she
has hsv type 2.
Now, this bothers me a lot. I have the
following questions I hope doctors in this
forum can answer.
1. Is it hsv type 2?
2. Can we rule out any other condition?
I have gone through a lot of
discussion/forum in the internet and I
have encountered experiences by other
women with similar symptoms and swear its
not hsv type 2 as some of their doctors
told them but connected with their
menstruation as it appears after that.
My wife's appeared after days of her heavy
menstruation.
3. I've checked my tool for a number of
times already and I can't see a single
blister. I feel I am clean and she did
not acquire it from me, if my wife's
condition is indeed hsv type 2, are any of
the following scenarios highly probable?
3.1 she acquired it years before, did
not experience the symptoms, the virus
stayed dormant (for nine years at
least????) and was "reactivated" recently
because of fatigue, stress, sickness,
etc?
3.2 her hsv type 1 which she had as a
teen ager, developed into hsv type 2
because she had a break in her skin down
there due to too much scratching (which
she did!!!) and that the vaginal itch was
caused by her being a diabetic or maybe
the moist caused by wearing tight fitting
panties (which are both true).
3.3 she recently had sex with somebody
and was just making a fool out of me!
"hsv is std and there's no other way to
acquire it but through sex". Although, I
don't see anything about my wife that
would make me suspicious and I don't think
she ever has the time anyway with
everything that we're busy with. Also,
while most sites maintain that hsv type 2
is std and hsv type 1 is passed through
kissing, I acquired my hsv type 1 when I
was barely 12 years old and years before I
had my first kiss. My theory is that I
acquired my hsv type 1 after too much
friction in my mouth and nose area when I
had a cold as my first five experiences of
hsv type 1 happened that way.
Thank you and I hope some doctors would
give me a clear medical advice about this
condition before this breaks my marriage.

I'm not a doctor, but from what i've read
about hsv ii it does indeed sound like a
first-time breakout. Usually, reoccurring
symptoms are not as heavy as you've
described. Perhaps some itching and small
sores, but everyone is different. I
believe it has to do with the immune
system, but some people rarely breakout
with little problems, while others
breakout several times a year. Again
that'd be my guess, i'm not a doctor and
haven't read that, and would wonder if it
has to do with their immune system at the
time of acquiring the virus (giving them
good antibodies to fight it forever) or
their immune system at the time of
reoccurring breakouts (meaning sickness,
stress, etc. Could have an effect).
1. Could be.
2. I'd say no. Hsv ii just like any
other disease can be misdiagnosed. If it
can be misdiagnosed, that means there are
other diseases that similar signs and
symptoms. See a doctor, get a diagnosis,
and ask about possible misdiagnosis (what
else could it be?). Did the women you
spoke with have a name for the condition
where it appears after menstruation?
3.1. It is possible to have hsv ii
without any signs. Whether it can be
dormant and come about 9 years later, I do
not know. However, suppressed immune
systems can make symptoms worse. So I
suppose (but do not know, ask a doctor)
that a strong immune system could keep her
symptom free and then a weakened immune
system allow it to present signs.
However, as I understand it, diabetics
have weakened immune systems and i'm not
sure how much that rules out her ability
to suppress symptoms all these years.
3.2. As I understand it, hsv I and hsv ii
are different viruses. Both are possible
to have in the mouth area and both are
possible to have in the genital area.
Though ii is more common genitally, and I
is more common on the mouth. So i'd say
it's impossible for hsv ii to form from
hsv i, but I would not know if hsv I could
move to the genitals (and with the
severity described) from the reasons you
presented (itching, etc.).
3.3 everyone has hsv i, wouldn't know the
percentages, but practically everyone.
Though, it may be considered generally
from kissing, i'd think it could also be
given by touch. Such as someone with a
cold sore touching it, shaking your hand
and you touching your face. Don't know
though. It's likely that you got hsv I
from a kiss from your mother or family
member. Like I said, everyone has it.
I'd say go to a doctor and find out. Talk
about misdiagnosis, the menstruation thing
the women mentioned, possibilities of it
remaining dormant, etc. There are
underlying medical problems that could
causes herpes as well.
