Joe,
this could be a fungal infection. Firstly go see a doctor. A fungal infection can spread quite quickly and infect the the next nail.
There are many treatments available: some prescribed and some more a home remedy. Some work and some do not.

Does sound like a fungus. The meds used to treat toe nail fungus are very hard on your liver and are also very expensive. The Dr. Will need to monitor your liver closely to prevent damage. My wife has it and the doc. Told her the risk of the 'oral' meds. Was not worth the reward. She lives with it just fine. Just keep your socks on if your embarassed.

Oral or ingested medicine is not a good idea you have asked your gp exactly what the possible side effects are.

As the condition (as the name suggests) is fungal - counteracting with a herbal remedy may be the solution.

Have a looke here at some possible treatment that work for some that do not
cost anything.

remember though (i'm sure you have done your research) there is not a quick sure fire solution. Any treatment that you undergo (we are talking natural) will take many months to see an improvement.
