Q: HCG Levels & Miscarriage
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 13th, 2007
My last period was on Dec 13, 2006. I took a few home pregnancy test over the last 3 days and all were positive. Today I had minor cramping and seen the dr. I had blood work done and my HCG level is 34, the Dr. said I am going to miscarry even though I show no signs. There is no bleeding or spotting, he said it was clean when he did the exam. Is 34 low for only being about 17 days pregnant. I am feeling fiine.

One test result for blood levels of HCGs is not conclusive enough to draw conclusions about a pregnancy's prognosis and possible miscarriage. Several HCG-level measurements are necessary to draw a conclusion about miscarriage. In normal pregnancies, the HCG-levels almost doubles every 2 days. If HCG-levels do not increase by 60% over 2 days ago, or if HCG-levels decrease, there is a possibility for miscarriage.
