Q: Pregnancy or ovarian cyst?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 20th, 2007
I have been on birth control for almost two months now. Here recently in the last three days I have taken myself off of it. I am not supposed to have my menstrual cycle for another three weeks. I am having cramps, nausea to almost a feeling of vomiting, breast tenderness that gets quite painful. I am concerned of a possible pregnancy or an ovarian cyst. My dr has scheduled an exam for a week from now but I have concerns or fears I would like have some answers to, to help relieve some of the stress. There is a possibility of pregancy but I would only be a few weeks along and I took one home pregnancy test and it was negative. Am I concerning myself over nothing? What is my physician looking for by doing a well woman exam?

Given a negative pregnancy test, it doesn’t seem likely that you are pregnant. An ovarian cyst, when hormonally active (functional), manifests as lack of menstruation but the pregnancy test is negative. Functional cysts are typical for women your age and they can be confirmed with anultrasound scan. A well woman exam means a vaginal examination with a colposcopy, Pap-test and microbiological vaginal smear.
